Weight Loss Update: October Mini Goals

I've decided that starting over is harder than starting the first time. I'm sure this sounds crazy since I now know the strategies and resources, but I also know what it feels like and how hard it is. A low carb lifestyle is something I have to work at daily and since the end of July, I've backtracked a lot.

So, hello October. I know how hard this next month will be because I've been here before. I know what it takes and I know I have to make a fierce commitment if I want to see change. I've decided to commit to some mini goals. I have a great accountability partner and I want to help motivate and encourage her as much as she does me. We can do this!

October Mini Goals
-Log ALL food in MyFitnessPal app
-Remain consciously positive and grateful
-Give myself some grace for slip ups
-Plan ahead for meals out
- Meal prep my lunches
-Exercise 3 or more times a week

There you have it. To my readers, hold me accountable. I want to do this. I need to do this.

I can do this.

Finding Grace in My Weight Loss Journey

Highs and lows. A typical weight loss journey is filled with them. I find this especially true when it's not just the weight that needs to be changed, but the lifestyle. I've been hitting major walls since the end of July when my family and I took our vacation. I have had a really difficult time getting back on track and while not all of my choices have been bad, I feel the poor choices outweigh the good ones.

I've also learned that during this journey I must allow myself to experience some grace. Giving myself grace has not always been something I've allowed. I beat myself up emotionally and I trash talk the face looking back at me in the mirror. Our words are meant to edify. We are meant to build each other up. That goes for ourselves as well. Talking down to myself only made me feel worse. It did the opposite of motivating me. That's where grace comes in.

But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.

Through my Christian walk, I've learned a lot about God's grace. He shows favor upon us and carries us when we cannot carry ourselves. If we are supposed to strive to be Christ-like, it only seems logical that we should offer ourselves the same grace that we offer others and that which is offered to us by God. I've been thinking on this a lot lately, and quite frankly, it has allowed me to free up a lot of mental space. I no longer drag myself down as much as I was. I try to find quotes and scripture that motivate. I look for positive qualities in myself. I take great joy in the small victories. I've also been reminded that caring for my body in a healthy way is what I am called to do. By calling on God throughout my battle with weight loss I am not only building my testimony, but I am showing others His goodness. I am able to share my love for Him and His goodness in my life through the tests I overcome.

In order to make a lifestyle change of this magnitude and maintain it, we have to be willing to let go of our mistakes. We have to focus on what we are doing right and look for ways to continue to better ourselves. It's not just a change of mind, but a change of heart.

I've realized the importance of connecting with others on similar journeys. I've found this to be completely true in my battle with infertility and I am finding it follows suit with my weight loss. My two major focuses this week are connecting and meal prepping. I've done pretty well with the meal prepping but I need the accountability. A sweet friend has agreed to share the load on this journey as she and I both move forward with our Low Carb way of life. She may be miles away, but her encouragement overcomes the distance. I am thankful.

So, while I continue to battle these 7-10lbs that keep fluctuating and keep me from my first 30lb goal, I will take into account what I am doing right and offer myself some grace when things don't go as I had hoped. I've made a lot of progress and I know I can do better. I will do better. I will meet my goals and I will love myself. The only one that can make these changes is me...but some grace and good friends along the way make the ride a little more pleasant.

5 Lessons I've Learned Since Going Low Carb

I am about 5 months into adjusting to a Low Carb (LC) way of eating (WOE). I’ve had several people join me on this journey. I’ve gotten asked multiple questions over these past few months and I thought I’d share a few things I’ve learned thus far.

1.

It’s all or nothing.

I’ve learned that you are either committed or you are not. My sweet hubby jumps on board every now and then but has yet to really stick with it. I have found that everyone has to use the principles of LC eating in a way that fits them, but they must be committed to seeing it through. I set a limit of 100 or less net carbs a day. I typically average 40 or so. The hardest part to date is finding foods that fill me up, because I refuse to be hungry, and allow me to stay within my parameters. I also make sure I stay within my sodium limits. I was diagnosed with high BP during my first pregnancy (we still don’t know why) and it has not regulated since. While I’m on the high end of normal, I could cross into a chronic issue at any time. Watching my sodium is just as important as losing weight. I also maintain a balance with my fat and cholesterol intake. No matter what you decide to do, you have to either be all in or not. It’s the only way a true lifestyle change can occur.

2.

Track it.

I track my food almost daily. Sometimes it hurts to put in what I’ve eaten (which means I did not make a very good choice) while other days, I am amazed at how content I am and how few carbs I’ve eaten. By tracking my food intake, I not only can easily see my carb intake, but I can easily monitor my sodium, fat and cholesterol intake. I keep an eye on the cholesterol simply because a lot of LC eating involves some foods that are higher on that end and as we know, too much of a good thing is not always a good thing.

3.

This is life.

I am adjusting to a new way of life when it comes to LC eating. I now find myself naturally leaning towards lower carb options at restaurants and only allow myself to visit some of my high carb favorite dining establishments every now and then. We do not eat out often, but I’ve definitely become pickier. I want quality food with options that I know will allow me to have something other than a salad. I’m not paying good money for a bowl of greens if I’m going out. With all of this in mind, I know there are days when I do not worry so much about my carb allotment. For instance, we just celebrated my son’s first birthday. I enjoyed every bit of it…the finger foods, the fruit, the cake…EVERYTHING! And I did not feel guilty. That’s the beauty of this. Because I am not making over indulging choices regularly anymore, I can feel good about enjoying days like that without the guilt.

4.

Preparation is key.

Whether it’s meal planning, pre-cooking, or setting my mind in the right place, I have to be prepared. I make a monthly menu that centers on LC meals. This dictates my shopping list. I will often cook a large amount of protein (chicken, beef, etc) at the beginning of the week or make double/triple of what I’d need for one meal, so that I have plenty of extra to help with other meals. I also have to get in the right mindset. Whether I’m cooking at home or joining friends out, I have to make sure I am prepared to face temptations. I must mentally prepare to make the better decisions. It has gotten so much easier as time has gone on…I won’t lie, the first month was definitely the hardest.

5.

It’s not all about the scale.

One of my dear friends bases too much of her success on the scale. We talk about this regularly. I’ve encouraged her to start taking measurements. I’ve also noticed a major increase in her muscle tone…and as most of us know, muscle weighs more than fat. The scale may not always move, but there are other tell-tale signs of success. Do not be defeated just because the scale is not showing you what you hoped to see.

I am regularly encouraged by those who are doing this with me. I feel better and I’m proud of my success. I am finally in a size smaller pant and I don’t cringe when I look in the mirror. I’m learning how to love myself where I am. I know I need to incorporate real exercise and I desperately need to start toning. These are my upcoming goals. So, whether you are just beginning a new journey or you’ve been on one for a while, keep going. It is totally worth it.

Monthly Weight Loss Update June 2016

Here I am, 4 months in to this new WOE. I can honestly say, that despite the occasional challenges, I am honestly liking. I like how I feel. I like how I am beginning to look. I like the food. I like that I am not hungry.

This is truly a way of life for me.
Image result for low carb meme

This month was a little slow going in the way of weight loss, but overall, I am still pleased with what is taking place. I had a few more splurge days than normal and I know that is where my downfall lies. I'm still trying to master eating out...and even though we do not eat out often, it remains a challenge for me. I also struggle some when we go to the homes of friends or family to eat. Because what I am doing has nothing to do with allergies, people aren't as aware of what is best for me to eat. I make due and if I am able to contribute to the meal, I try to ensure that I bring something that I know I can enjoy without exceeding my carb limit.

This month did result in some changes...

I am down 3.8lbs from last month which puts me at a total loss of 23.8lbs. I'm down a total of 5.5 inches overall. I can tell this primarily in my chest and waist.

I continue to experiment with different recipes. I always try them out with my husband and daughter, and thankfully, most of them have been family approved. This is very important considering I am making this a lifestyle.

Over the last month or so, I have had a couple of friends/family members jump on board. I love having the support. We share recipes, frustrations and successes. I really encourage you to find the right kind of support if you are going this route. My goal is to have my husband join me on this journey but I have not quite convinced him to do so yet. Fingers crossed.

I am continually reminded that when this change is hard, I am doing it for a better quality of life. My God has already numbered my days, but I want to care for myself and make each one of those count. I'm learning how not to allow my "messy days" to take over all the good I've accomplished. A couple steps back will not keep me going backwards. Thanks again to all of you who continue to walk this journey with me and encourage me along the way.

First 5 Mini Goals

I've been on my low carb-get healthy journey since February. There has been a lot of trial and error and even more baby steps in the right direction. I have set mini goals that motivate me to lose 5lbs per goal. I'm well on my way to my first big goal of 30lbs. So, I thought I'd go ahead and share my five goal rewards for this week's Five on Friday.

5lbs
This lovely bead for my Pandora bracelet. I chose it as a reminder that I am able to overcome my PCOS diagnosis. I can overcome my issues with infertility and weight loss. God is bigger than my diagnosis.

10lbs
Thrive
I love CC and their music is always inspiring. One thing I've wanted to do with this life of mine is Thrive instead of merely survive. The tunes on this album continue to give me the encouragement to push on.

15-20lbs
This wallet from Thirty-One was a little more pricey so I opted to combine it for a 10lb weight loss goal. I just got it yesterday and I love it!!!!

25lbs
The Pioneer Woman Cowgirl Lace 12-Piece Dinnerware Set

I have been eyeing these PW Cowgirl Lace dishes for quite some time now. I can't wait to get them on my table!

30lbs
::via::

I am already becoming in need of some smaller clothing but I'm holding out. I'm hoping to meet my goal by the beginning of school and at that point, I'll do some updating to my wardrobe.

Thanks to everyone for their encouragement. I'm definitely getting there!

New on Instagram! My low carb life...

"You are not your own; you were bought with a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies."
1 Cor. 6:19b-20

It's no secret that I have always battled my weight and self image. The struggle began as early as late elementary school. I've battled emotional eating, fad diets, calorie counting, exercise routines and self loathing.

I've always know that there has to be something better. I could be better. The Lord has brought me through so much and the past year has been difficult health wise. In an attempt to restore my heart, body, and mind, I have been breaking down my own stigmas and perceptions by learning how to take my thoughts and actions captive and compare them to what the Lord says in His Word.

I have been told many times that because of my PCOS, a lower carb way of eating (WOE) would really benefit me...but who wants to give up bread and pasta? Not this girl. However, thanks to a friend, I was really encouraged to give it a try. Over the last 4 months I have been transforming the way I view food and the way I eat it. I am slowly making low carb a way of life.

I've really been encouraged by the weight loss and the way I feel. I feel good! I've had a lot of people ask how I have been working this in my life and I plan on sharing details soon. In the meantime, I have set up an IG account to share meals and bits of encouragement for those of you who are also trying to restore your health.
I'd love if you'd follow me at
bought.with.a.price

Remember...we were bought with a price. We have this one body in which to live and serve the Lord and I personally want to give my best. This begins with caring for His temple.

Monthly Weight Loss Update May 2016

Another month has passed and although I have had multiple setbacks this month, I am still proud of my success thus far.

I have lost a total of 20lbs!

I've lost a total of 7 inches.

A lot of my clothes are actually appearing to be too big on me.

I'm down a total of 3 notches on my belt.

I feel good (minus this weekend's hit with the GI bug).

I am looking forward to having the summer off with my kids. I am counting down the days. I am also hoping to add more exercise into my routine. One thing I know I need to do to better myself is to not treat the weekends like I'm on a free-for-all binge eating party. I have had a real issue with just letting myself go on the weekends. I don't feel well after eating like that and I know it is not good for me.

Self control.

So...here's a toast to more progress. I am so close to my 30lb goal!

Monthly Weight Loss Update April 2016

Getting healthy is no joke. I have a ton of reasons why I want to do this for myself and for my family and I'm using all of those reasons to keep me encouraged when things get tough. I've made it through about 3 months of low carb eating and I can honestly say that I do not really miss those things that I was missing last month...such as pasta, bread, etc. I still struggle some with sweets, but nothing like I did in the beginning. I can't take all the credit to my weight loss this month. I had a couple episodes of health issues that led to me not feeling so well, which in turn led me to not wanting to eat as much as I normally do. I hope all of that is on its way out and I'll get back to feeling 100%.

In the past month I have lost 9 lbs.
That makes a total of 19.4 lbs.
I'm over half way to my first goal of 30lbs.

I'm now fitting into clothes that I could not wear 2 months ago.

I went down another notch on my belt.

I can literally walk out of some of my pants because they will not stay up without a belt.

The biggest challenge I now face is getting into an exercise routine. Life is crazy, no matter how I try to slow it down and it just does not seem like I have time. I'm looking forward to June when I'm out of school and I can have a little more time to focus on me and exercise.

I'd love some tips from other working women and/or mothers on how you incorporate exercise into your daily routine.

Weight Loss Journey Update March 2016

::via::
I remember starting this journey in 2011. I wanted to feel good and be healthy. I tried various weight loss techniques that included watching what I ate and exercise. I was diligently training for a 5k at the time. It took me a whole year to lose 25lbs. I could not understand why I wasn't closer to where I wanted to be considering all the time and effort I was putting in. I was diagnosed with PCOS later that year, which explained a lot. My body was working against me, not for me.

My weight loss came to a halt when we became pregnant in 2012. After struggling with infertility, this was a welcomed surprise. I jumped on the "get healthy" wagon again soon after G was born. Once again, the progress was SO SLOW! It took me about a year to lose and maintain the loss of 20lbs. We faced our infertility issues once again and we were hopeful that the weight loss would help. It didn't but we at least knew where to start and I became pregnant in the fall of 2014.

All of that brings me to this. It's time to really get healthy and to find a lifestyle change that truly works for me. With my PCOS diagnosis, it's no surprise that weight loss is even more of a challenge. I've never known how to really work my diet outside of exercise, calorie counting and portion control...until now. I've read multiple articles and various medical findings that suggest a low carb way of eating. A few weeks ago a friend of mine suggested that I give it a go. She has lost substantial weight with this type of eating. I was slightly skeptical so I looked into it.

Some people tend to go a little overboard in my opinion and I'm in awe of the ability to eat so few carbs that some people have. My friend currently allows herself 20 carbs a day, along with no sweets. Whoa. I'm still amazed. I've also learned that by only focusing on carbs, you can quickly become over saturated with sodium. I for one have to watch my sodium intake, so while bacon has little to no carbs, I can't eat it repeatedly for the sake of my sodium levels. It's all about finding a happy medium.

::via::
I have decided to learn how to eat low carb. I chose to lower my carb intake to 100g or less a day. I feel comfortable with this level and it is often the level used in clinical studies (like this one) for PCOS patients participating in a low carb/high fat way of eating. The exciting news is that a lot of women with PCOS discover that their symptoms lessen or even go away completely...including infertility issues. For me, this is a win-win all the way around, even if it does not result in fewer infertility issues.

So, here I am. I began this new way of eating on February 29th. One month later I have seen some exciting changes.

I have lost 10.2 pounds.

My wedding rings are looser.

I moved one notch on my belt.

I was told that my face looked thinner by someone who is unaware of my attempts at weight loss.

I've met my first two mini goals!
I'm still trying to decide on a reward for hitting 10lbs but I got this beautiful bead for my pandora bracelet. The color represents PCOS Awareness and it is a reminder that I can overcome the challenges of my diagnosis.

This type of change in diet is not for the faint of heart. To those who said I would not miss pasta or bread...I'm calling your bluff. I do miss those things but I'm working on ways to substitute them. For the record, I am not the 'no carb police'. I allow myself a cookie now and then or a taco shell. However, I do include those things in my count. Those types of things have truly become treats.

Needless to say, the first two weeks were certainly the hardest. Things have become easier as I go along. I consider this a life style change and I refuse to live my life hungry. It's been a lot of trial and error as I try to discover what will meet my dietary needs as well as make and keep me full. I am determined to do this. I'm actually looking forward to meeting with my doctor this summer. I hope she's pleased with my progress.

If you have been doing LCWOE, I'd love to hear any suggestions in the way of snacks and recipes that you love for Low Carb eating. I believe I'm in this for the long haul.

Bouncing Back After Baby - Post Baby Goals

::via::
I'm 2 months post birth and I'm still not feeling 100% myself. N's pregnancy was much more difficult and his labor was 2 times longer than that of his sister's. Let's just say my body feels like it has been through a war. I'm still healing and the various issues I've had since his birth have not been as easy to deal with at times. There have been multiple doctor/dentist visits and quite frankly, I'm over it. I want to feel good again.

Prior to his conception,  I had lost 20lbs. I only gained 17 during his pregnancy and lost that pretty immediately. However, just as before, there were things that made it difficult to breastfeed and after a couple weeks, I was unable to do so any longer. Some of the weight creeped back on. ::sigh::

We've been asked if we're done having kids and to that I don't have a solid answer...but I can say I have goals until then. These goals are meant to carry me over the next couple of years and mini goals will be implemented along the way. I don't want to rush my body but I don't want that to stop me from moving forward.

Goals

1. Lose 30lbs. I am actively using FitnessPal again and I'm eager to see some change. I'll be once again blogging about my progress soon.

2. Put our house up for sale. We have a few projects left prior to officially putting the house on the market but we're well on our way.

3. Get reconnected. The last few months have been difficult in the way of personal relationships and my relationships with friends, family and Christ have suffered. It's time to get more involved again and fix what can be fixed and find closure with what can't.

4. Build our forever home. I desperately long to build our new house. Our land is just begging to be settled upon. We can't begin that venture however until our current home is sold. It's so close and yet so far...

5. Survive financially over the next 12 months. My maternity leave is cutting my pay by several hundred dollars each month for the next year. We've been saving, making cuts and trying to just prepare ourselves all the way around. This next year will be super tight and we are trusting in the Lord's provision. He's never failed us.

::via::

6. Live intentionally. As of late I have known or read about too many people passing away unexpectedly and it really gets you thinking. I want to make memories, live fully, overcome my fears and anxieties and show my children what an amazing life the Lord has blessed us with.

7. Date my husband. I have a really hard time leaving my kids. I admit it. After being gone from them all day, all I want to do is be with them. However,  this doesn't grow my relationship with my phenomenal husband. I need to let go and let others help us more. I need to go on dates with my husband minus both kids and relax. (Can you sense my type A personality?)

::via::

8. Revamp my teaching style. I love what I do as a teacher. Every year I say there are things I want to do or change and rarely do I do them. It's time to fix that.

What goals do you have?

Opt Out October

Well, judging by the scale you could assume that I've given up. Not true. I've just not prioritized things the way I've needed...or maybe I have, but the balance is off. Whatever the case, I'm not happy with the last month and a half and I need to get things back together.

The same goes for our spending. I'm pretty saving savvy but this past month I've made some impromptu purchases and I need to reign it back in. These things have led me to choosing to do an "Opt Out October" personal challenge.

October will be the month that I get some things back on track.
Weight Loss Quotes, Tips, & Sayings | My Weight Loss Dream
::via::

To get healthier this month I will opt out of the following...
-excuses for not exercising. I have to get back to making my body move. I've signed up for the Glow Baby Glow 5k to get myself motivated.
-doubt. There have been moments over the last month that have made me question whether or not I can really do this. I can.
-complaining. If I don't like what I see or how I feel, I have no right to complain because it is within my control to change it.

day17
::via::
To make some savvy spending choices this month I will opt out of the following...
-buying coffee more than 1x a week.
-eating out more than 1x a week. We normally rarely eat out but this past month has been a bit crazier than most. It's just been so easy to grab a pizza or Chinese instead of making a healthy home cooked meal.
-buying clothing...I rarely buy clothes for myself, but for my little one...yes. I adore tiny human clothes and when I find a great deal I jump on it, especially since she is outgrowing all of the clothes we were given as gifts/have received as hand-me-downs. The one exception will be a pair of black tights.
-home décor purchases. Nope. None. We're working on getting our house ready to sell and that is where the money needs to go.
-things we don't use...need to be gone. I have big dreams to remove even more clutter from this house.

This month will hold a couple little treats. We're hoping to have some family pictures done this month or next. We're also planning on celebrating our 6th anniversary later this month. Those will be special items that I'll budget for. The only other things that I'm having to work out are the unexpected medical bills we have coming in. Suddenly my insurance is not covering some things that they've been covering in the recent past. Grrr.

So this is my plan. I'm hoping to see positive results in both areas. Wish me luck!

A Little Revamping...

ZsaZsa Bellagio – Like No Other: Wonderful Year, Wonderful Wonderful NEW YEAR!
::via::

Okay...this week has been a bit crazy. Over the weekend my daughter came down with a 103 fever. This lasted through Sunday when it broke mid-morning. We took her to the pediatrician and found out that she once again has Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD). She's had this before but not this bad. In the past she had a rash and a high fever that lasted a few days. This time around she didn't have the fever as long but her rash is far worse and she has the blisters in her mouth. It's been a challenge finding things that she wants to eat. At least she has been taking lots of fluids.

On Tuesday she woke up at 4:30am and much to my dismay, did not nap at all! She finally laid down around 8:00pm. I don't know how she did it. Not only was I listening to a super cranky baby going down the road after an evening of parent-teacher conferences, but then my poor hubby called to say that he was leaving work because he was sick. His flu like symptoms made him pretty miserable and because he loves me and wanted me to stay healthy, he slept on the sofa bed. ::sigh:: It was a rough start to the week.

I needed a break from the chaos and thanks to a few posts by Leslyn, I felt inspired to revamp some of my fitness goals and to review my 30 by 30 list (especially since April will be here sooner than later.)

I've been maintaining my 20lb weight loss, give or take a few pounds (and right now it's more on the give side). I've really been trying to rein in my eating habits as of late (goodbye ice cream and cookie dough and cupcakes and...) so I've been opting for more fruits and veggies. Right now the two main things I have been focusing on are eating fruits and/or veggies for my snacks and getting plenty of water. I love water but teaching often distracts me from ensuring I get enough...not to mention I don't really get the opportunity to use the bathroom at will so I have to be conscious of that as well. Overall though I'm feeling better about my choices. I hope to start getting back to an exercise routine as well.

Now for my 30 by 30 list...

30 By 30
1. Host a Brunch Party

2. Begin (and finish?) building our forever home

3. Hike to a waterfall

Monthly Weight Loss Update

Well, August has been another month of maintenance. I still weigh less than I have in over 5 years but I still have a ways to go. It's definitely been a journey.

September is PCOS Awareness Month and I'm no stranger to the struggles it can bring. I was diagnosed in 2011, although looking back the symptoms were evident even in my teens. Before my diagnosis I was unaware that there was a "real" problem. My symptoms were my "normal" and no one had ever told me different.  As a teen I was told things would eventually even out or that some things are just genetic. No to the first and yes to the second. While looking at me you would never guess the battles I face...this is true for most women with PCOS.

We get pretty good at wearing smiles. I generally pride myself in being open and honest but this is one area of my life that I've kept pretty quiet until recently.  In order for me to not deal with this alone and to offer support to others I've had to learn how to talk about it. One of the hardest things to talk about aside from our infertility struggles is that of my weight/weight loss.

PCOS...it makes it so much more difficult to lose the weight. My doctor sympathized and was pleased with my progress at my annual exam. She encouraged me to keep going...even though she knows I'm up against a lot. Unfortunately I have to work a lot harder than most at losing the weight thanks to the way my body breaks down the food I eat and produces insulin. This in turn causes various hormone imbalances that lead to weight gain and/or difficulty losing weight and in my case, infertility. There is always something out of whack.

However, I refuse to use that as an excuse. I know I need to amp up the exercise and continue adding more fruits and veggies to my diet...because when you hit a plateau, that means you are in need of a change.

August held a lot of highs and lows. We made an offer that was accepted on a piece of property with a beautiful view. We'll be signing on the dotted line tomorrow and then we can really begin planning our forever home. This has been a wonderful distraction from the disappointment of yet another unsuccessful month of trying to conceive. From a health perspective, I'm waiting to hear from my doctor about our next step. I've also been checking with my insurance on what they offer in regards to a dietitian. I've found a local dietitian who has worked specifically with women with PCOS. I'm hoping something will work out. I feel like I'm at the point where I could really benefit from an expert's advice.

With all of that being said, I'm trying to make some changes this month. I'm not a huge snacker but I definitely did my fair share over this past month. I'm a stress eater and with work beginning again and some of the other things we've had going on...I've not always considered all that has made its way to my mouth.

Being at work has definitely helped with my snacking issue, but I also need to focus on snacks that work for me, not against me. One of my friends gave me a great suggestion for my sweet tooth. Chocolate milk is seriously one of my most favorite sweets. Milk, while good for you, can hold a ton of calories...and then when you add the chocolate...well, you might as well have just had dessert. She recommended I try dark chocolate almond milk. I've converted to almond milk and must say I really like it. I've used it in both my cereal and baking/cooking and don't notice a major difference and with the low calorie/high nutrition content, I feel good about my choice. Now back to the sweet stuff. The dark chocolate almond milk is A.MAZ.ING! It tastes delicious and for 100 calories I can enjoy a full glass without the guilt. (I've only tried the Silk brand...and I've not been endorsed to recommend it.)

I hope to have better news in my next weight loss post. I've got the reasons for motivation, I've just got to get my act back together. I've only got this one life. I need to live it right and care for the skin I'm in.

This about sums it up! Lifestyle change for yourself and your family. Treat your body good and only put good things into it.

Monthly Weight Loss Update

If you remember in my last post, I didn't have any thrilling news...which is okay. You win some and lose some and while I wish I was losing more than what I am, I'm proud of small victories. I gained a few pounds last month and it was my goal to get them off. Of the four pounds that packed themselves on I have lost 3 of them. That puts me back at a 20lb loss.

Even greater still are the discoveries I made this past week. I decided that with school starting, and since I have not bought new clothes in ages (I am currently still wearing clothes that I bought after graduating collage), a little shopping trip was in order. Having lost 20lbs, many of my clothes do not fit like they once did. This is a good and bad thing. Some of my pants now fit as they should while other pairs literally fall off of me.

Now, when it comes to pants, I've always had a problem buying a pair that fits just right. This is simply because those that make pants must assume that women with my waist size have hips to boot. I do not. There is nothing "hippy" about me. How does this relate to my discovery?

Well, I ventured into Old Navy to purchase a couple of tops. They were having a sale on their khakis. The pair that I had bought last from ON fit fine prior to the weight loss. They now require a belt if they are to be worn. While these pants originally fit better than most, I still looked like I had wings where my invisible hips were supposed to be.

My first discovery was the Diva Everyday Bootcut Khaki pants. Love! They are designed for the souls like me with straighter figures. (Don't get me wrong, I have curves. They are just in the wrong places.) I love how they hug me in all the right places.

My second discovery was the size. I could wear a size smaller!!! Talk about an embarrassing happy dance! I was so excited! While to some this is nothing, to me this was a huge accomplishment! I have not put on a pair of pants this size since high school.

This got me excited and I added a couple more pieces to my work wardrobe (pardon the pictures. I'm horrible at selfies.)

This has given me a new sense of motivation. I'm making a few food choice changes. I've been reading through The Low GI Guide to Living Well with PCOS (again) and I have decided to get back on track with a diet that includes more PCOS friendly foods. Remember, when I say diet, I'm not referring to starving myself. I am referring to the types of food I eat.

I've made a few changes to my menu that include low glycemic foods, which means less dairy, more whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean proteins. There is a balance and I am working towards that. Low glycemic foods break down more slowly, leaving you feeling fuller longer, and helps reduce the surge of insulin that is often produced with starchier foods. You can view a pretty comprehensive list of Low GI foods here.

The final discovery I made while perusing the good ol' internet, is the Food Swap tool by the Glycemic Index Foundation.

You can also find more resources on my Living with PCOS board.

So here's to hoping for good things in August.

Monthly Weight Loss and Pictures

I won't even pretend that I've given a praiseworthy attempt at losing weight or accomplishing my goals this month. In fact, since I'm being completely honest, this month I hit a wall. I've been facing a weight loss plateau and I let it get the best of me. Curse this back and forth sway of 1-2lbs. I lost focus. I got caught up in the traveling, and while wonderful, I didn't eat like I should, nor exercise, during those times. I allowed being away from home to be my excuse for extra snacking and high calorie food options. I was on vacation!

We've also been facing some personal matters and I've found myself settling into old habits. More than once I caught myself turning to food for comfort. Remnants of my Emotional Eating surfaced but I refused to let them stick around.

I've tried not to be too hard on myself...that would only crush what motivation I have left. While this last week has held many wonderful things, it has also held it's share of stress, anxiety and disappointment, but I did my best to not allow these feelings overrule my better judgment. I've gotten in a little more exercise this past week and I'm feeling better about greeting July (if you don't count the fact that half of my summer will be over ::tears::)

So while I wish I had amazing results to share with you this month...I do not. I know in order to move forward that I can't focus on "what I should have done."
make things happen. don't stress when it doesn't go the way you think it should. #NOQUITMONDAY

I did, however, have a memorable moment...my hubby and I took our first "real" date since the birth of our daughter over a year ago...and I wore "the dress". This dress has not been worn in almost 3 years. It fit better now than it ever has...I consider that a major accomplishment.

With all that being said, I've decided to take a step back from social media for a while. I feel that I need to be devoting myself more to some of my relationships and health and I need to get myself going forward in full motion again. I'll still be blogging, but maybe not as often and as for Facebook...don't be offended when I look clueless if you tell me about something you posted. More than likely I will have missed it. As much as I love reading updates, I have some updating that I need to do outside of the technological realm. God bless and I hope all of you are enjoying your summer!

Chasing Dreams

"Show me your ways, Lord,
    teach me your paths.
Guide me in your truth and teach me,
for you are God my Savior,
and my hope is in you all day long."

God has been teaching me a lot through this verse lately. My sweet hubby and I have a lot of dreams before us and our prayers center around the Lord's will and what He would have for us. I've had a lot of "moments" lately where my perspectives have been challenged and in some instances, changed.

Earlier this week I was talking to my best friend about some of the things weighing on my heart. I told her that I really want to be in God's will and that I am doing my best to seek what He would have for us. In her infinite wisdom she told me that she "once heard that if we are following Him, then we are already in His will. We don't need to worry about figuring out if we are or aren't." Basically I am following Christ and by doing this, His plan will unfold before me through prayer and obedience. I've never thought about my walk with God that way. Maybe it's the church jargon but I've always thought that part of my job as a follower of Christ is to continually seek His will...but I've begun to realize that it's not necessarily His will I am to seek, but to wholeheartedly seek Him instead. By seeking and following after Him, His plan for my life will become evident, His will becomes my will and while I may not always have or gain understanding of His workings (Is. 55:9) I will be giving foundation to my hopes and dreams that are aligned with His plan.

It's no secret that my hubby and I want to add to our family. We've prayed about adoption in the past and have done so now. While we would like to do this in the future, we do not feel called at this time. We do, however, know that God has laid the desire for more children in our hearts. We welcome the beautiful mess that is parenthood.

A typical scene in G's playroom

My PCOS journey has forced us to deal with matters of infertility, depression, strained relationships, and the testing of our faith. In December of last year I met with my doctor regarding my PCOS diagnosis. I had switched practitioners right before I found out I was pregnant with G, and since we have begun discussing future children, I thought it best to seek out her guidance. Can I just say I love my doctor?! She always has a plan. She always takes the time to answer my questions whether in the office or via email. She is always supportive, open and honest. I am in such good hands.

She ran a gamete of tests and determined that my testosterone levels were high. When this occurs, it causes other necessary hormones for pregnancy to be awry. Her first objective was to help level out those hormones. Then came the medication...again. Anyone who knows me knows that I hate taking medication, but one does what she must. She also recommended that I work on losing 5-10% of my body weight. This is supposed to help support balancing my hormones, potentially increase my fertility and eventually lead to a healthy pregnancy. It was at that point that my weight loss journey began.

I've since lost over 5% and I'm working my way towards that 10% goal. In the midst of losing weight it was noted that I was not ovulating sufficiently so I was put on Clomid to assist with ovulation. We're hoping that these efforts will result in a healthy pregnancy in the near future. All we can do is wait.

::via::

Waiting is so HARD! There is nothing easy about it. To help with this during my first pregnancy I began a journal for our child. I wrote to our child often and once we found out her gender and decided on her name, the entries became that much more personal. I still write in that journal and I look forward to giving it to her one day. To help with this new time of waiting, I've begun a new journal in hope of filling the pages with letters, stories and memories for another child. Both of these journals contain not only sentiments but their designated life verses and names that we had/are considering.
The top journal is for G and the bottom is for our "yet to be" baby

We truly believe the Lord has wonderful things in store for our family and as we walk this road we are trying to not fall back into the feelings of anxiety, doubt and fear that we faced during our previous journey to baby. God continues to speak to my heart as I chase these dreams. I'm going after what I believe He has for us and I am doing my best to remain hopeful.

I'm continuing to learn a lot about prayer and coming boldly to His throne with my requests and praise. In Marla Alupoaicei's book study, Prayer Warrior Mom: Covering your kids with God's blessings and protection, she quotes a passage from Martin Collin's "Parable of the Persistent Friend."

God often answers us after long and preserving requests. He hears prayers and grants
blessings long after they appear to be unanswered or withheld. He does not promise to
give blessings immediately. He promises only that He will do it according to His
will and plan. Although He promises to answer the prayer of the faithful, often He
requires us to wait a long time to try our faith. He may allow us to persevere for months
or years, until we are completely dependent on Him, until we see that there is no other
way to receive the blessing, and until we are prepared to receive it. Sometimes, we are not
ready to receive a blessing when we first ask...If what we ask for is good and accords with
God's will, He will give it at the best time possible.

So in this time of waiting, I will continue to move forward with the things that I already have going, steps towards other dreams we have, and I will try not to focus or reflect too much on the pain of our past. While those painful moments have been an important part of getting us to where we are both in love and appreciation for the gifts we've been given, they also bring back an ache that is far too familiar and will only distract me from what lies ahead. I'd appreciate your prayers as we wait.
