Our 8th Wedding Anniversary

October 25, 2008.

This date holds a place in my heart like no other. It was the day I married my best friend. I vowed to love and cherish him until death do us part. I placed my heart in his hands in hope of a beautiful future.

When we said our vows 8 years ago, we knew we were bound to face hard times. We had no idea that infertility would become a part of our story. We never would have guessed that God would alter our lives in a way that will require an unmeasurable amount of time to heal. Our vows have been tested. Our love for one another has been forged in the fire.

And through it all, we’ve overcome.

The last 8 years have also brought us so much joy. We are working towards building our “grow old” home. We are soaking up every possible second with our two beautiful children. We have seen each other through new jobs and ministries. We have danced in the rain. We have sat quietly, just enjoying being in one another’s presence. We have seen dreams, our dreams, come true.

I will forever be grateful for the man I get to call my husband. He is proof that while we think we know what we want, God truly knows what we need. He is more than I could have asked for. He is the spiritual leader of our home. My man loves Jesus! He raises his family in this way and loves me as Christ loves the church. I cannot imagine myself with anyone else. I look forward to prayerfully growing old with this man of mine.

So here’s to many more years with this love of mine…

Date Night: August 2016

In January my husband and I committed to dating each other this year. This meant that we'd set aside one day or evening to purposefully go on a date with one another. This would require planning around his schedule and the kids, and so far, it has worked. Our June and July "dates" were more like "hey, let's grab a bite before going home from Lowes." We've been super busy and these past two months have reminded us why this time together is so important. With August winding down, we needed to get a date on the calendar. Every weekend was taken by his work schedule so we dared to opt for a weeknight. I know, we're such rebels. My in-laws came and watched the kids and we were off.

I've lived in our little part of VA for 9 years now and I've still yet to visit all of the local favorites. We decided to try Robin Alexander's. It's a lovely bistro set in downtown.

We loved the atmosphere. It was a place you could get a little dressed up for, but would find yourself perfectly comfortable in a pair of jeans. And the food...the food was delish.

We started off with their wings as an appetizer. We chose bone-in.

My husband chose a specialty drink as well since this place is known for its drinks. He got the James and the Giant peach martini. I don't personally drink but he said it was excellent.

We then chose our main courses. Their menu is pretty versatile and it was hard to make a selection. We eventually decided to try their gourmet burgers.

I loved their Big Kahuna Burger. It's a delicious combo of Hawaiian flavors.

My hubby tried their Bison Burger. Yum!

The meal did not disappoint and our time together was much needed. I'm really looking forward to our next date.

March Date: Richmond

Things don't always go as planned. For this particular date we had planned to make a quick trip to see our friends, but plans change and agendas are sometimes cut short. Regardless, we made the best of our quick outing together.

We had to go to Richmond for a Lasik consult for my hubby. We love visiting Richmond so we thought we'd take advantage of our time there. After his appointment, we made a mad dash to get something to eat. Our original plan was to go to a local firehouse themed restaurant. It was closed until 4pm. On to plan B. We opted for a delicious meal at Rock Bottom Brewery and Restaurant*. It was a new restaurant for us and we were excited about trying their fare.

Pardon his squint eyes...he was still dealing with dilated eyes

*I was not compensated in any way to give my opinions of this restaurant. They are completely given on my own accord.

It was a difficult decision of what to eat (because everything looked amazing). We both instantly agreed on an appetizer. We chose the Firecracker Shrimp.

I finally decided to go with the their Jambalaya. I really don't have words. It was SO GOOD! The flavor was completely on point and it was super filling.

Hubby chose the Maker's Mark Burger. I had a nibble and from the look of his plate by the end, it was a definite win.

We did a quick run into a couple of stores at the Short Pump Mall and began making our way back home. I happened to see a sign for Tom Leonard's Farmers Market. It was our last stop before heading home to the kids. I found some great deals on some fresh veggies. They were having an awesome sale on fresh jumbo shrimp but considering we were almost 2 hours from home and I had no cooler, they were a no go. I was so sad.

I got over my shrimp induced sadness and enjoyed delightful adult conversation on the way back home. While the date was brief, it was so nice to just be with him. I'm so glad we made the commitment to start dating again.

Big Change Can Be a Chance for Big Faith

A few years ago my husband came to me with a heavy heart. He was not happy with his job. I don't mean it had been a bad day kind of unhappy. I mean the kind of unhappy where he dreaded heading in, his sleep and health were suffering and his joy had been suppressed. He wanted out.

I knew how hard it was for him to come to me with this. He had a great paying job with good benefits. I had just started to work as a teacher after having had to quit my job to complete student teaching. His paycheck is what pulled us through. We were talking about trying to get pregnant and we had several things on our plate that would make him leaving this particular job difficult.

While I wasn't surprised, I was a little nervous. He proceeded to tell me that he wanted to go into full time firefighting. Becoming a professional firefighter had always been his dream but he did what he was advised upon graduating high school by applying and then working for that particular company. If he had followed his heart, he would have already been in full time fire service.

He said he felt called. Who was I to argue? God had called me out of my previous career to teach. I also knew in my heart that he was meant for this. He lived and breathed firefighting and his passion was to serve others...neither of which he really got to do at his other job. So, we stepped out on faith. He applied for a job through the city, and after several interviews and tests, he got the call that he had been chosen. I have never been so proud.

I was, however, a little anxious. This would mean a lot changes. He would be working 24 hour shifts and depending on the need and demand, he could be working as long as 72 hours at a time. It also meant a HUGE pay cut...as in thousands. It also meant he would be going into blazing buildings while others were running out. He would be willingly putting himself in danger for the sake of another and their possessions. My husband could die doing this.

I prayed about my concerns and in the end I had complete peace about all of it. God had led us to this and He would lead us through this. Of course, when we announced his decision and change of employment I was met with multiple responses:

"He could die! Doesn't that scare you?"

"He's leaving such a good paying job. Is that a smart idea?"

"Many firefighting couples don't make it. The stress is too much on a marriage."

"Won't that be hard when you have kids?"

"I could never do it. I don't like sleeping alone and I wouldn't want my husband gone all the time."

Each question and response were valid. I had played all of those things out in my mind, but I KNEW we were making the right choice. Following God's direction is always right, sometimes hard, but always right. The transitions we faced were sometimes daunting (maybe I'll share about that later) but not for one minute have I regretted our decision.

Sure. He could die in the line of duty, but he could also die in his sleep. He could be in a car wreck or have a heart attack. That's God's call, not mine. I have been blessed in the fact that He works with a true brotherhood. They don't leave their men behind and if he were to die on the job, I know without a doubt that everyone will have done all that they could. I also know he would go doing the job he was called to do.

People have also gotten hung up on our financial sacrifice. God has proven time and time again that He will provide. We rebudgeted and live within our means. We've yet to have a bill paid late or a need that wasn't met.

I cannot sugar coat it. Being the wife of a firefighter is hard. I'm well aware that many marriages don't make it in this line of work. It's stressful and lonely but our marriage is not just about me. It is about us and we work hard to make it work. Do I like sleeping alone? No. Have there been nights I lay awake and worry? Yes. However, when you truly love someone and you truly trust the Lord, you have to put that person's life in His hands and leave him there.

It also definitely poses challenges when it comes to the kids. Being mom and dad to your kids can be really hard. It's important to not vent your frustrations about your single parenting to your children. There are nights I'd pay big money to have him home to help me, but I signed up for this. God gives me enough grace and provision to make it through each day he's gone. Instead of focusing on the time he's gone, I look forward to when he'll be home again. I want my kids to be proud of their daddy. I want him to remain their hero and they can  only do that if I set the example.

God has taught me so much through the course of our marriage and this is just an example of how these opportunities can be used to grow our faith if we let it. God continually remains faithful, even when I struggle. The next time you are faced with a big challenge, try to view it as an opportunity to grow some big faith.

Committed to Dating My Husband

With two little ones (2 1/2 years and 6 months old) consuming our time and energy, my husband and I have not had a lot of time for us. We'll be married 8 years this fall and we do not want another year to pass consisting of such small amounts of quality time. His job as a fire fighter keeps him away from home a lot and my work as a teacher has me exhausted before my feet ever hit our doorstep. Then we take into account that our evenings consist of making dinner, baths, bedtime, prepping for the next day etc. By the end of it all we're dragging ourselves into bed, falling asleep almost immediately. Romantic I know.

One of my goals this year is to work on some of my relationships. One of those is dedicating more time to my husband and I. We have a great marriage, but with a little more effort and together-time, it could be that much more amazing. Thus our Dating Commitment was formed.

He and I decided to plan for at least one date night a month. We choose our date, mark it on the calender IN PEN, and then decide where we'll go. I've begun collecting a lot of ideas for local dates and we're looking forward to making the most of this time together.

We recently went on our first date of the year. It was super low key and perfect.

We began by heading out midmorning to the local farmers market. We enjoyed browsing various venders and some delious, fresh ground specialty coffees.

We tasted the sweet treats made by Mrs. Joy. She is the winner of this past year's Food Network Christmas Cookie Challenge. Her chocolate chip cookies are some of the absolute best I've ever had. Seriously. I know cookies.

We then browsed a local antique store where we found some inspiration for our future home.

For instance, this table...

We took part of the afternoon to enjoy an uninterrupted meal.

We finished the afternoon by running a couple of errands. It was so nice to have conversations that didn't revolve around unexplained messes and dirty diapers. We got to talk about our future, our dreams, and hold hands. Normally our hands are holding children, bags, etc. All in all, I honestly would not want to go back to the days before we had kids for anything. However, I did enjoy this first of many dates with my husband. It's so important to take the time to focus on one another...to remember why you fell in love in the first place. You owe it to one and other.

Seven Years Strong

Today my husband and I celebrate 7 years of marriage. In that time we've seen many friends get married and then far too many divorce. People have their reasons for separating but likewise, he and I have our reasons for staying together.

Before I go on, our marriage is far from perfect,  but we do try to live according to the marriage God has put together and continues to bless.

First off, we don't consider divorce an option. We are solely committed to each other and the vows we made to God. We try to keep him the center of our marriage and that helps to keep our marriage centered on what it should be. Our thought on the matter is that if one of us leaves, it's because the Lord has called that person home.

Secondly, we try to make the other feel appreciated. A lot of divorced couples use that as a reason...they feel under appreciated. Marriage takes work. It's not something that just magically takes care of itself. You have to be in it...all in.

Thirdly, we pray for each other. We know that temptation is out there. The grass always looks greener, especially when things are a little rough at home. Praying for your spouse through the good AND bad times makes a huge difference.

Finally (there is so much more but for the sake if time), we tell each other how much we truly love the other. We don't throw that phrase around. We mean what we say. We give compliments and words of encouragement when we can. It's so important to affirm the other person.

Like I said, we have our faults and our flaws but we truly love one another. We truly want Christ in our marriage and we want others to see His blessings in our lives. It's not always easy but it's worth it. Besides, we set the example of what our children will look for in their own relationships. We want to know that we are showing them the right things.

The Hand That Holds Mine

When I look at the hand that holds mine, my heart often skips a beat. It's rough and slightly calloused from hard work and helping others. It is gentle and calming in the midst of fear and uncertainty. It is secure when everything around me seems to be falling apart.

That hand belongs to the man that God gifted to me. A man so strong in his faith that he does not waver. He is a man who provides for his family and yet tends to the needs of others with just as much love. He is a man who shows his children how Christ calls men to father and love their wives. He proves that God can use imperfections to further His kingdom.

He is the man who has walked me through our battles with infertility. He is the one who speaks words of love and encouragement when I think "I can't." He is the one the Lord hand picked just for me.

At the end of this month we will celebrate 7 years of marriage. These 7 years have included arguements, making up, job changes, infertility, children, a house, births and deaths and a whole lot of memories. I look forward to spending the rest of our lives together. I meant what I said when I took those vows and the hand I held then is the hand I hold now and it is the hand I hope to hold the rest of my life.

Shout Out

June 2014
So there is this guy...he's humble, optimistic,  generous and selfless. He provides for his family, risks his life to save others and willingly rocks his little one to sleep.

This same guy loves the Lord. He is instilling that love in his daughter and he leads by example. He has a heart of service and doesn't think twice about helping those in need.

He is honorable, compassionate and empathetic. Even so, he is strong, courageous and determined. He is a leader both in life and in his home.

This very same guy was designed and chosen by my gracious God to be my husband and a wonderful father to our children.  With all that life has thrown us, especially lately, he proves over and over again that true love exists. His selflessness and thoughtfulness abound. I don't think he realizes how much it means when he takes it upon himself to tend to G or have the house cleaned before I get home. The times that he has dinner ready despite what day I've had melts my heart. God broke the mold with this one...and I'm so grateful that he's the one I get to spend my life with.

Why I Love Him

I married my best friend.
::via::

In 15 days we'll be celebrating 6 years of marriage. I cannot believe how quickly the years have gone by. I'm eternally grateful to God for bringing us together. I'm also grateful that a sweet country boy took a chance on a girl that he met one summer...

I thought I'd dedicate this week's post to my amazing husband...here are five (granted there are thousands more) of the top reasons why I love him.

Our Wedding 2008

[A Heart of Gold]
The mold was broke when this guy was made. I've never met someone who was so generous, caring, and sincere. He is truly my better half.

Our first anniversary 2009
We're under the "Wedding Bell" at Dixie Caverns.

[Country Strong]
He was raised to work hard and play hard. We share so many of the same passions including the outdoors, traveling, and family. We have treasured memories that center around campfires, four wheelers, mud on the tires, and star filled skies. He knows my heart.

[A Man of Faith]
The most important quality of the man that I would marry was that he'd love the Lord and have a heart for His commandments. When I met my hubby in 2004 at a Christian camp in Central Virginia (we were counselors), I learned two very important things about him. One, he loved the Lord with a beautiful passion. He had, and still has, a servant's heart and is a living testament of God's goodness in his life. Secondly I learned that he loved children and wanted his future little ones to love the Lord the same way he does. Almost two years ago we were blessed with our miracle babe and He has been keeping good on that promise.

2011

[Sing-a-longs]
My hubby has a secret talent. He has the potential to be a living, breathing, walking one man musical. He has the ability to turn everyday conversation into song. This keeps me laughing. The best part is that he starts out in fun and then has a really hard time stopping!

[My Best Friend]
As a gal who never dated in high school...and I mean never...well, ok there were two blind dates but I try not to think about those...I was not sure when or if God would bring "the man" into my life. I had always had guy friends but none of them ever took a chance on me. I was the "best bud" and the one you came running too when the girl you thought you loved broke your heart. I remember meeting my hubby and not thinking twice about him in my future. I was trying to make peace with where God wanted me and little did I know that I would meet the man that I'd spend the rest of my life with. Four years later we married and I can honestly say he is my best friend. He is the one I cry with, laugh with, and dream with. He is the amazing father of our beautiful little girl and proves his amazing love for us over and over again. I'll love him forever...
