The Kids Behind the Blog: August 2017

It's time for this month's TKBTB link up!

If you could change one of your family's rule, what would change?
I would let us have 3 desserts a day!

Are you a good friend? Why or why not?
Yeah, because I am nice and pretty. I'm a good friend because I love people!

Where is your favorite place in the whole world?
My favorite place is ummm...the carnival! I love to ride the strawberries and the helicopters with my daddy.

If you could invent anything in the world, what would it be?
I would make a wish for my family and make something that could cook our food.
(I don't think she is clear on the word "invent" and I am hoping she wants to invent something that would cook the food so mommy wouldn't have to lol)

What are you most excited about this year in school?
I love going to school because school is my favorite. I like to play and dance and read a story. Oh and the music!

This year G will be in Pre-K and N will be starting in the 2 year old class. My babies are getting so big!

Book Reviews: July 2017

With my summer winding down, I have been franticly trying to get in some good reading time. School starts and I'm back to work on the 7th and my time will become much more limited. Here are the books I made it through in July.

This book was recommended to me by a friend. It was a sweet story about a man who visits a small town of great significance. The people he meets there end up changing his life for the better. If you want a feel good read, this would be it.

This was an incredibly inspiring book. Erin and her class are the ones whose life stories were made into the movie, Freedom Writers. I personally love the movie and I was excited find Erin's memoir. It was even better and more thought provoking than I had hoped. I actually read this book during a pretty heated racial protest in the area where my husband is a firefighter. A lot of what I read hit home in ways I did not expect. This book is a keeper.

It is a pretty typical story about a privileged girl and a handsome boy who spend the summer together. It is your typical summer romance, but I enjoyed it as a quick read.

I'll admit it, I hated the main character for the longest time in this book. I was beginning to wonder if anything would happen that would ultimately make me like her. The story takes some interesting turns, and as always, Giffin does not disappoint. By the end, I at least began to like the main character.

I. Love. This. Book. The main character was someone I could relate to in so many ways. The author chooses a very unlikely heroine as her main character...one I adored. Her plight after her husband's death, her grit and transformation, and the ending all came together to form such a great, and unusually inspiring story. For reasons I won't mention, I found myself encouraged and cheering her on. Now if only I could get my hands on more books Evanovich has written! Our library only carries this one and then one of her books on CD. I'd love to listen to it while driving but her books are not really for little ears lol.

To check out what others are reading, check out this month's link up!

Learning to Lean-Mid Year Update

At the beginning of the year, I felt led to live the word "Lean" throughout the following months. It has been hard.

I've tried to embrace the scripture when difficulties arise, when the darkness seems to swallow the light...I've had a lot of anxiety lately. It's the kind that keeps your mind spinning at night. Worst case scenarios pop into your head and you cannot close your eyes because you know you'll see your deepest fears played out. What is harder still is talking to others about it. Maybe I am not as strong as everyone thinks I am.

I have grappled with grief in unexpected moments. It seems to hit the hardest when I realize how happy I am. It sounds strange but it seems like that is how survivor guilt works.

I've wrestled with anxiety and lost countless hours of sleep. I have allowed thoughts to bring on near panic attacks. I have physically felt the strain that my emotions have put on my body.

During some recent quiet reflection, I just kept saying, "enough is enough. I cannot keep living life like this." At that moment I realized what I had been neglecting to do. I had forgotten to lean. If you go back to the action words I just mentioned...

spinning
grappled
wrestled
lost

Do you see "lean" on that list? Me neither.

I am not meant to carry the weight of these burdens. I am not meant to live a fear filled, anxiety ridden life.

In fact, scripture clearly states the opposite:
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness. John 10:10

We are designed and intended to live a full and abundantly blessed life.

Satan does not call me by name. He calls me by my insecurities. He calls me by my fears and anxieties. He calls me by all the things that I cannot control. When I stop and just listen...be still and sincerely listen, I hear my name. I hear Beloved. I hear "you are Mine." (Isaiah 43:1)

When I am not leaning on God and only rely on my [in]ability to understand the emotions within me and the world around me, I find myself on an overwhelming obstacle course. However, when I lean on Christ, my path is made straight. I may not know why or where I am going, but I can rest assured He has laid the road before me.

I will continue to learn what it means to lean into my Savior. I will call His name to bring forth light in the darkness. I will declare His name to the enemy that aims to riddle my thoughts with fears and shortcomings. I will continue on.

I want to leave you with this song by Hillsong United that has left an impression on my heart. Let the words seep in and wash away the lies you have been believing. He has carried you all this way. Lean into His embrace.

Fate
Holds nothing on the providence I know
No longer bound to things of wood and stone
When all I had to offer was my worst
You saw my heavy heart and loved me first
Your beauty staring down my brokenness
You chose to throw Your heart into the mess
Compassion crashing down upon my debt You were there
All this time
Like a river running through my failure
You carried me all this time
Like the splinters buried in
Your shoulders You carry me now

Royally Waiting Link up #22

I've been taking some time to enjoy my family this summer. The days have been going by so quickly that I have not had time to sit and blog lately. While it is something I enjoy, time with my ever growing little ones takes precedent. With that said, I'm back again for this week's link up!

Revising...
http://www.waldorf.edu/

My hubby has officially gone back to school. He will be getting his BAS in Emergency Management. He'll be taking one course at a time since he is still working full time. His course this semester is an English Research class. As the lover of English and literature, I am his acting editor. A couple times a week you'll find me using the children's nap time to proof read his papers. I am so proud of him for taking this step!

Seeking...
I have been seeking guidance on a couple of ventures lately. Hopefully I'll have more to share soon!

Dreaming...
We meet with our builder this week to begin the process of picking out all the details of our house. We'll decide on counter tops, fixtures, exterior colors, etc. The list is a mile long but I cannot wait! This puts us one step closer to breaking ground. Here are a few items and or pictures of inspiration.

I'm swooning over this clock

Eating...

Low carb eating can have its challenges, especially when it comes to sweets. I have no intention of giving up my sweets, but I do try to make intentional choices. Halo Top ice cream fits the bill and while I've only tried the Peanut Butter Cup, I am sold. Bring on the flavors!

I hope this finds all of you well and I can't wait to see what you've been up to.

The Kids Behind the Blog: July 2017

June flew by! I feel as though I blinked and our summer is half way over! I'm trying to soak in every spare second with my littles. Hopefully July will be slower in passing. However, with July in full swing, it's time for the Kids Behind the Blog link up. Join the fun!

What do you need to make s’mores?
-marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers

What is your favorite summertime treat?
-chocolate cookies

Would you rather fly in an airplane or ride on a ship?
-Ride on an airplane because I did not ride on one before.

How would you change the world if you could?
-Be a happy person to everyone.

What comes after summer?
-Winter-fall...?

Needless to say, we've made a few s'mores over the summer lol. I'm not sure where the "chocolate cookies" answer came from because all summer she has asked for ice cream or popsicles. We also apparently need to work on our seasonal transitions.

I cannot wait to see what everyone else's little ones had to say.

Book Reviews: June 2017

Ah, summertime. Here are a few books I've been able to get through this month.

These reviews are my personal opinions and I have not been compensated in any way for sharing my thoughts.

As we prepare for our new house to be built, I'm constantly looking for landscaping ideas. I am far from having a green thumb, but I plan on giving it my best shot. This book had great visuals and is very "how to" friendly. It also recommended plant groupings/pairings that would be appropriate for our region.

This story was beautifully written. As the story opens, I was immediately drawn towards the main character and I eagerly read through the pages to know him more. The outlook on faith and religion is pretty on point from my personal view and I loved how the overall message was that God is love.

Giffin has a new reader. I could not put her book down, and thanks to my hubby managing the kids, I was able to read through most of the book in a day. Yay for "me time"! The story combines a little romance and football...two of my favorite things. I was so caught up in the details that I was sad when the story ended.

Room by Emma Donoghue
I was captivated from the very beginning. This novel shares the story of a young woman and her son who have been forced to live their lives inside a small room. It goes through their journey, both inside and outside of that room. I was engrossed throughout the entire book.

Yep, another Giffin book. I can't help myself! This story takes an interesting turn as the main characters big secret is revealed. I wish the story had a slightly different ending, but that is the hopeless romantic in me. Overall, it was a great read.

This is the second book in this series, however, I did not realize that until I was well into reading the story about two young teens trying to navigate their way through high school. Most people would consider this story Young Adult Fiction, but due to some of the explicit scenes and verbiage, it was cataloged under adult at our library. I did enjoy the book. It was a quick read and I look forward to reading more of Layne's work.

Royally Waiting Link up #19

Practicing...
Last week and this week we've been taking the kids for swimming lessons Monday-Thursday. They have great instructors and the kids really enjoy it.

Eating...
I've been eating low carb and I'm feeling really good! The tired and sluggish feelings are dissipating as I continue on. Thursday will be 2 weeks on without any major emotional binges.
::via::

Enjoying...
I'm not a typical lover of hot weather and the heat has been vicious. We've had a couple recent days of tolerable, dare I say nice, weather and we've been soaking it up.

Quick fixing...
Some mornings are chaotic and I've been trying to keep the healthy jive going for my kids as well. I've never been one to watch gluten, but since I've been lowering it in my own diet, I'm doing the same for my kids. These muffins are a great quick breakfast fix for the kids.

I'll have things that are more exciting next week. Until then, I hope all is well with everyone!

Royally Waiting Link Up #18

I'm ashamed to say that it has been quite some time since I've joined the Royally Waiting Link-up. Life just gets so busy, and while I am not blogging consistently these days, I find that I become even more infrequent during these super busy seasons. It's good to be back.

Enjoying...
School is out for the summer! Praise Jesus! It has been a long and difficult school year and I am so grateful for the break. It allows me to spend a little extra time with my littles as well as catch up on big things around the house...such as the spring cleaning I never got around to. We've been enjoying a lot of activities so far and the memories we are making are precious.

Planning...
My son's 2nd birthday is in about 2 weeks (queue the waterworks.) Just yesterday I was throwing together his 1st birthday. How is it that another year has gone by so quickly! We'll be having the party at our current (rental) house and space is a bit limited so we'll be primarily hosting outside. Prayers for good weather are appreciated.
His first birthday!

Reading...
I'm super late to the Emily Giffin game, but better late than never. I just read my first book by her and I am smitten! I love the way she writes and weaves such emotion into her characters. I just picked up another book by her at the library and I can't wait to begin!
I just finished this book...so good! You can read my review next month. (For past book reviews, go here.)

Getting back to...
I'm getting back to my low carb way of eating and I am adding in exercise. This time last year I was almost 25lbs down and feeling so good! October's accident really put me in a downward spiral and I've been feeling pretty miserable and my self-esteem is no where near where it should be. I'm out to change this. I am making goals and a plan and prayerfully I'll see good things happening. I hope to be posting about this more in detail soon.

::via::

Making progress on...
We've got some exciting things coming up in regards to our new house. My husband and father-in-law cleared the area where we'll be building. The loan company is supposed to be coming out by the end of this week or sometime next week to complete the assessment. Hopefully that goes well and then the paperwork will be sent to the underwriters. We're in a distinct period of waiting right now, but I know that good things are coming. God has blessed every part of this journey so far and I expect nothing less as it all comes together. My hope is to be in before Christmas...fingers crossed!

5 Things to Consider When Choosing a Preschool or Daycare

Hello! If you are reading this, it is likely because you are on the hunt for the perfect placement for your sweet babe(s). The thought of leaving your little one in someone else's hands may bring a sick feeling to your stomach, because, let's face it, no one can do what you do, the way you do it.

Point well taken, but unless you are lucky enough to be able to stay at home or have a trusted family member care for your child, you will very likely be finding yourself on the path to finding another type of care setting for your child.

I had to embark on this journey and to be quite honest, I dreaded it. How was I going to go back to work and let someone else care for my baby? I did not have a choice in returning to work, but I did have a choice in where I would send her. As a former Child Protective Services worker and now elementary school teacher, I knew what I did and did not want in a placement. I did a lot of praying during this season of searching and I was fortunate enough to find a woman within our church who cared for our daughter for three years and then our son for two years. She was amazing and will forever remain a precious jewel to our family.

Unfortunately, the time came to look for a preschool for our kids and I was faced with similar issues when looking for just the right one. I have since been assisting friends and family in discovering the best fit for childcare for their children and all of that has led me to this post. There are 5 main things to consider when choosing a preschool or daycare for your child.

1. Certification
Certification can be relevant in several areas, all of which you should consider. A lot of "at home" or "private" sitters are not certified through the state. If you are unfamiliar with what this means, you can check it out here (this is specific to VA but you can look up your state as well). Be aware that this means that no one is following up with the care, number of children, or the care-giving environment of this sitter. Our sitter was not licensed and we were okay with that. She had only a few children, her home was always well put together and she sincerely loved our children as her own. I had no concerns. I will say, as a former CPS worker, I have seen the repercussions of home daycares not being licensed, so use your best judgement. We were very fortunate.

Center based daycares/preschools should be licensed. Check credentials. CPR and First Aid may be another certification that you desire your caregivers to have. If your caregiver does not have this, you can always ask them to consider obtaining these certifications, but keep in mind, they may not.

2. Facility
There are regulations as to how many children a center can have. Our children's preschool recently became certified for a larger number of students because they expanded their facility size and the number of staff. Fortunately, their groups will still be relatively small. We preferred a smaller class size for our kids and this preschool fit the bill.

When you are considering a facility, TOUR it. Do not go on the word of workers or friends. See it for yourself. When I was initially looking for a daycare for my daughter, I had heard a lot of good things about a particular facility. I went to tour it and could not find a designated "front" entrance. I ended up taking a chance on a side door. I was able to just walk in. There were two older elementary students playing on a computer with no adult supervision.  I remember thinking that someone could have snatched one of them up and been down the road before someone could get to them. I walked past them and found a worker sitting with a small child in the hallway. I was barely acknowledged and asked if I could see the director, of whom I found out was not there even though we had set up the time to meet that day for the tour. The worker told me that I was welcome to just walk around and check things out. I did. The facility itself was fine, but I was far from impressed. My expectations had been so high based on the recommendations of my friends. I was concerned by the lack of supervision and security.

My background and maternal instinct prompted red flags. I was far from comfortable about leaving my child at this facility. The condition, set up, and security of a facility should not be taken lightly.

3. Staff
Some people are just not personable. However, if you are going to be having your child cared for by someone regularly, they need to be approachable. When trying to find a preschool for our daughter, I attempted several times to make contact with the director. I spoke with her on the phone and was told to contact her on specific day and time to find out if our daughter would be accepted or put on a wait list. I did as we agreed. No answer. I left a message. Nothing. Several days later I called again with the same outcome. I got out of work early one afternoon and stopped by the facility. The director was not there and no one was sure when she would return. I left a message for her there and once again, nothing. I took this as a sign that this was not the place for my child, but it also left a bad impression.

The facility itself was fine and I knew many of the children who attended. However, the fact that I could not get answers to my questions made me concerned about how things would be when my daughter attended. Would they readily get in touch with me if something happened? Would they answer questions as they came up throughout the year? To these questions, I still do not have answers. It is essential that you feel comfortable and confident in the caregivers.

4. Location
Does the location make sense? You'd think this was a given, but it's not. Are you willing to drive out of your way for a great daycare or preschool? Will your time only allow you to go within a small radius? These are things you need to consider as you begin looking at centers.  Our private sitter was on my way to and from work. It was beautiful. However, before finding her, the facility I almost went with was just down the road from my work. It was ideal for me, but not for anyone else who may need to come pick her up. In fact, it was about 30 minutes out of the way for anyone else.

I had to consider location as I began looking for a preschool as well. The one we went with is perfect (for us) in almost every way. It's close to our house and is easy access for everyone who would be responsible for picking up our little ones.

5. Budget
Not to be throwing our business out there, but let me be real. Since our son was born, I have been spending in upwards of $900-$1000+ for daycare/preschool. I know a lot of people spend even more in any given month. Childcare is not cheap and GOOD childcare is that much more costly. Know your budget before checking into facilities. The sticker shock of childcare is one that hit us pretty hard...so much so that we decided to move our son a year early to the preschool in order to save some money (otherwise, he'd still be with his amazing sitter). It can be painful to write that check each week or month, but if you have a good, overall placement, you can consider it an investment. Also, when it comes tax time, be sure to have your receipts. Often times you can claim childcare on your taxes.

Of course, there are many other factors to consider, but the last thing I want to leave you with is this:
Go With Your Gut

You will know if where you are looking to place your child is the right fit. Good luck and I'd love to hear any tips you have from your searching experiences.

Book Reviews May 2017

May was kind of slow if you compare it to previous months this year. We just had so much going on and downtime was limited. Normally I would read after putting the kids down, but most nights I’ve found myself so tired that I would end up in the bed shortly after. I’m hoping to read a bit more now that summer is here. I hope you’ll join this month’s What We’re Reading Wednesday for some more great titles!

These reviews are my personal opinions and I have not been compensated in any way for sharing my thoughts.

In this book, the authors take a look at the love languages as children. This book helped me identify the various types of love languages in children and I have been able to apply the principles that I’ve learned, not just with my own children, but the children in my classroom. Every child has a specific way that they respond and need responded to in order to feel fulfilled and loved. This was a great and easy read.

For the most part, I really enjoyed Meeker’s perspective. She offers practical advice for the busy mom. She gets that life gets messy and complicated and she appreciates how hard we try to wear all the hats we are given. I was once again reminded about the importance of self-care and how adult relationships are essential, even though we often neglect these two areas while we are in the throes of motherhood.

This devotional is a keeper. Its daily inspiration and scripture are ideal for anyone waiting on well, anything. I’ve gotten to know the author over the last year and her heart is poured out on every page. For anyone searching for answers in the wait, this devotional will help you keep perspective, be encouraged, and provide applicable advice.

This story was a little slow for me, but a decent read. It also reminded me to not forget that we often do not see what is going on under the surface in the lives of others. The emotions experienced by all of the main characters were raw and well developed. My heart ached for the parents of the mute girl and yet, I could often understand why she chose to remain silent.

The Kids Behind the Blog May 2017

I’m completely bewildered by the fact that it is now May! What in the world! The past month has brought a lot of highs and lows and May seems to be following suit. At least this link-up is a true delight. I get the biggest kick out of my four year-old. I have no idea where some of this stuff comes from.
If you had a magic tree-house that could take you anywhere in the world, where would you go?

“Mmmm…to…ummm…to school!”

Finish this sentence…”Red Rover, Red Rover…”

“Under cover!”

What is your favorite memory?

“Jesus makes me happy and strong.”

What is your favorite part about nature and being outside?

“Cows and riding in my Jeep.”

What do you think Mommy would like for Mother’s Day?

“Get married!”

(for the record, I have been married to her father for almost 9 years lol)

“I’m thinking…money, and that’s all. I’m thinking that’s enough.”

Book Reviews April 2017

April’s reading kept me pretty content. Here are the titles that I dived into this past month:

I thought I’d share what I’ve been reading. These reviews are my personal opinions and I have not been compensated in any way for sharing my thoughts.

Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson
Fever 1793 was a great read. It is set in Philadelphia during the yellow fever epidemic. The story follows a young girl and her experiences of loss and gain during the epidemic. The book was hard to put down.

The Farmhouse was full of inspiration. It’s pages contained so many wonderful ideas that I’ve tucked away for when we build our new house.

Save Me was my favorite read of the month. Daphne Mitchell has the dream life until her husband comes home with life altering news. She faces a crossroads at which her circumstances will either make or break her.

The Best of Me by Nicholas Sparks
The Best of Me was such a sweet story. I enjoyed it so much more than the movie. It rehashes the love story of young teens and how the memories bring them closer at a later stage in life. The story was captivating and it was easy for me to get lost amongst the pages.

What Women Fear is definitely a keeper. A friend of mine sent this to me and I am so glad she did. The book covers a variety of fears that women face. Such topics include the fear of not being enough, the fear of God, the fear of death, and the fear of God’s plan for your life. The book has really challenged me to accept who I am and take hold of the confidence that I can have in Christ.

Royally Waiting Link-up #10

Well, I missed last week's link-up, but I'm back again this week!

Watching…

Moana. My daughter got the movie for her birthday and I’m pretty sure we’ve watched ten times since last week. Fortunately, the music is good and the movie is beautifully done.

Eating…

I made this yummy Sautéed Kale with Bacon and Garlic recipe for dinner this past week. It was super easy and very tasty. Kale is something I’m trying to eat more of and this recipe makes it easy to do.

Counting…
We have 4 Mondays until I’m done for the summer. It has been a long, hard year and this working momma is in need of a break. I cannot wait to spend some extra time with my babes and hubby.

Reminiscing…

Last weekend we celebrated our daughter’s 4th birthday. It was not anything fancy but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. I had bigger dreams for her cake but, as is typical of me, I ran short on time. I don’t think it turned out too bad for having about an hour to get it iced and decorated.

Accepting…

We’ve been thrown some major curveballs lately and I’m trying to accept that somethings will just have to be put on hold, no matter how much I want them to happen. I am continually reminding myself that despite how I feel, I KNOW that God has the best in store for us and I need to trust in that.
