Accept the Unexpected

It’s never easy to accept or admit moments of weakness. I think we as Christian women often hold ourselves to higher than necessary expectations. We all feel we must “do it all”. I am a planner and when my plans fail, I feel that failure as a mighty sting.

One of my biggest frustrations as of late is the whole house issue. We bought land last September and our dreams of building our new home seem so close and yet so far away. We initially had the plan to place our house for sale at the beginning of April. Prior to that time, I was diagnosed with placenta previa and this limited my ability to do various things around the house. There is painting, sanding, packing, etc. and I can only do so much. You add this to our work schedules and third trimester pregnancy and well…progress has slowed greatly.

We also had plans to move our boxed items to the place we hoped to stay during the time our house is being built. This also recently fell through.  It’s no longer available. Now we’re trying to figure out what to do next…

Plans. Good in theory it seems.

I’ve had a hard time trying to get excited about redoing our daughter’s room into a gender friendly toddler room/nursery. I’ve dealt with so much guilt over this because I was so pumped to complete our daughter’s nursery prior to her birth. There are days when I just don’t know where to begin, what to let go, and when to ask for help.

As always, despite my feelings and circumstances, God is working. He has recently been pushing through this muck that I feel so stuck in and He is helping me work my way into clear waters of redemption. Here is what He’s helping me see thus far…

-It’s not just my circumstances that He is working on. I know that the Lord is doing great things in our lives, but it’s not just my life that he is orchestrating. I’ve been thinking of reasons why the house timing keeps getting postponed. I believe God is helping our current home’s future owners become prepared for our home’s sale. I believe He is allowing more time for us to get done what we need to get done. I believe He has another option for us when it comes to where we’ll live during our building process (FYI-we can’t just rent anywhere because we have 4 dogs and 2 cats.)

-I need to be present now. Our little girl just turned 2 and the fact that these last two years have gone by so quickly makes me realize the importance of truly living in the moment. I’ll never get these days back. With that in mind, it’s also important that I continue to savor the months of my pregnancy. The reality of our infertility issues has meant that both of our children are unlikely blessings. The Lord has proven that He is bigger than these circumstances and has graced our lives with a beautiful little girl and come this summer, we’ll have a darling little boy. The stress that I’ve had over trying to get the house together and my guilt over the nursery has taken a turn. I don’t feel as pressured to put a “For Sale” sign in our yard (although I eagerly await the day) and I’m beginning to enjoy the nursery re-do. I’ve actually determined a theme and color scheme.

-He will always provide. The month of April has hit our budget in some hard, unexpected ways. I’ve not had a month this tight in a very long time. It began with me missing an email from my student loan company indicating that my graduated loan repayment was going up…$300+ more. That was a heart stopper when I checked my account. Then, about a week and a half later our German Shepherd came down with his seasonal skin condition. His skin develops a type of yeast infection at least twice a year when the seasons change. There is nothing we can do to prevent it. We just know that we’ll have to take him to the vet, have him checked out and then give him medication for a couple of weeks. However, to add to this, our sweet Maggie dog was unexplainably injured (we still don’t know for sure how it happened) and her vet visit resulted in sedation, stitches and antibiotics. Crazy. By the end of these two weeks we were out about $1000. While the amount is still hard to stomach and my bank account has not looked this sad in quite a while, the Lord has provided. I was still able to plan and throw our daughter an adorable 2nd birthday, as well as make our ends meet this month. I could not have done it without the Lord’s provision and long-term planning (just one more reason why savings are so important!)

-I am enough. I still struggle with this. I have felt like such an epic failure lately and my frustration level has been maxed. I want to be the best mom to my kid, the best wife to my husband, the best teacher/employee and the best friend that anyone could have…but there is a reality. I can never be the best. I can only do my best and this is where God’s grace has really been evident. He is giving me grace in the moments of my inadequacy. He has made me enough to be all of these things and all that is expected is for me to be the best of these that I can be. I am learning how to not hold myself to others’ standards and I’m learning to accept the unexpected.

If you find yourself dealing with similar feelings, join me in hanging up preconceived ideas. Cling to God’s goodness and accept His grace. Treasure the moments of the here and now. Embrace the things we can’t control as stepping stones to something greater. There is a time for all things and His plan will always be better than our own.

A Little Red Riding Hood Birthday Party

Somebody has turned 2!!!

Our gorgeous little redhead has hit yet another milestone. I can’t believe how quickly the time has gone. She has changed so much!
2015

2014

We celebrated with a fairly simple party. I chose a Little Red Riding Hood theme, and with the help of family, it all came together wonderfully.

Here’s a little recap…

The attire:

My mom has always been an amazing seamstress and once again, she did not disappoint. She sewed this adorable dress and cape based off of this idea. She nailed it!

The food:

Black Forest and Triple Berry (raspberry, blueberry and blackberry) Cupcakes

//Twigs and Dip//Fruit Tray//Acorns//Labels//

The décor:

I kept it simple. I went with a turquoise and red color theme. I bought some simple galvanized flower buckets from Target and then some coordinating flowers from our local Amish market. I had a box of crayons and these Woodland coloring sheets for the kids to work on at the tables. We also scattered some colorful balloons around the room for the kids to play with.

I also started a tradition for our little girl last year. We request that everyone sign a book with a sweet note to commemorate her birthday.

Overall, everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. The kids appeared to have a good time and we were left with a lot of sweet memories.

Bump to Birth: 7 Months

We're on the home stretch and we still have so much to do! Time is going so quickly this time around.

Size:  Eggplant

Gender: Blue is our color

Name: It will be a surprise!

Symptoms: sinus pressure,  increase in carpal tunnel issues, vivid dreams, tire easily, sensitive gums, toothache, round ligament pain, back pain

Emotions: Excited and anxious.  We have not begun on the nursery transformation and the fact that time is dwindling is weighing on me. I feel like so many things have been put on hold and they are outside of our control. This is a definite time of refinement and character building.

Doctor’s Visit:

March 27th- Baby boy had a great heartbeat and my blood pressure looked good.

April 6th - We had another ultrasound to get the remaining measurements.  The baby looked wonderful and they could get what they needed. My placenta has not moved in the past 4 weeks so I'll have another ultrasound on May 15th.

April 14th- I was having some really strange back pains since the night before. They reminded me of the contractions I had with our daughter.  My doctor had me come in and based on my sympptoms, I was sent to Labor and Delivery.  I was monitored there for 3 hours. Everything checked out ok.

April 16th- Dentist appointment for a cleaning. I have to return after the baby to have 1 major cavity filled and then he'll take care of four others that are borderline. This kid is zapping my teeth of calcium and minerals!

Movement: He's pretty active these days, and quite powerful.

Cravings: eggs, donuts, cereal, pizza and BBQ pork rinds

Aversions:  primarily smells and Mexican food

According to Big Sister: She's still not "wanting" a baby at the house but she loves to acknowledge that there is one in mommy's tummy.

Memories:

- Our friends found out that they are having a boy AND a girl!

-G visited the 2-3 ' s class at church.

-We had a date night out for Daddy's firefighter awards ceremony.

-Finished our registry.

-Celebrated Easter.

-Celebrated my 30th birthday.

-Enjoyed a vacation to TN.

-Celebrated G's 2nd birthday.

-Enjoyed a visit from my mom and best friend.

30 before 30 revisited

One week ago today I turned 30. Something about that age makes me feel like I am a real adult. I remember when I was in high school thinking how old that seemed, and now, I don't feel any different than I did in my mid-late twenties.

God has been so good to me over the last 30 years and He'll undoubtedly be even more amazing in the years to come. I've finally taken some time to go over my 30 before 30 list. I accomplished many of the things on my list, and while I wish I had been able to cross them all off, I'm proud of what I've done. Maybe a 40 before 40 is in order?

Let's see what I was able to cross off...

Mommy Guilt? Not this time!

There were a lot of things that I allowed myself to worry over and feel guilty about when I first became a mother in the Spring of 2013. I’ve been determined to free myself of these thoughts and feelings now that we’re expecting our second in July. I’ve realized that our decisions have not all been perfect but our daughter is no worse for wear. If I must say so myself, she’s turning into a pretty amazing little kid.

As moms, we place so much weight upon our own shoulders. We compare our parenting choices to those of others and we often question ourselves. Ultimately, I’ve learned that the important thing is to own your choices.  So this time around, I own our choices; I’ll change as needed and embrace motherhood with a whole new perspective.

Here are a few things that I will not feel guilty about this time around…

Breastfeeding vs. Bottle Feeding

I’ll be honest. I was not thrilled about the idea of nursing. Of course I loved the benefits, but it was not something that I was jumping at the bit to experience. However, it was and remains my goal to provide the best that I can for my children, and of course, breastfeeding serves as one of those things. I gave it my best try. I worked diligently with the lactation consultants at our hospital and I did what I could to provide for my daughter in this way. Maybe it was my frustration with my limited supply or the constant feeding every hour to hour and a half that killed the “beauty” of this natural experience. About a week and a half into our newborn’s life, I was only getting about 1-2 ounces after pumping both sides.

Our daughter was waking every hour or so with her "hungry cry" and we could not figure out why…until it was suggested that we supplement with formula. I discussed this with my pediatrician’s office and they encouraged me to give it a try. The result? Our baby began sleeping for about 3 hours at a time and was finally putting some weight on. We soon learned that my PCOS diagnosis not only impacted our ability to get pregnant, but it was also impacting my milk production. After 3 months of pumping and attempting to nurse, I was barely getting enough milk to cover the bottom of a bottle. I gave up. We went exclusively to formula. I have a lot of friends who have had wonderful experiences and great success with nursing. I was not one of them. I allowed myself to feel less than I was because I could not nurse my baby. I was even prepared for a lecture from our pediatrician but instead, she reaffirmed our decision and praised us for making such good decisions for our daughter. It was at that point that I owned my decision to formula feed and I didn’t look back.

Disposable vs. Cloth Diapering
I’ve toyed with the idea of cloth diapering for a while. I thought about it prior to our daughter’s birth and I’ve revisited it this time around as well. I have seen those who thrive with the cloth diaper system and my dear friend has walked me through all the steps and has provided some fantastic information. The reasons why I should are many, but ultimately, it just isn’t the best fit for our family…at least not at this time.

Working Mom vs. Stay At Home Mom

When it comes to this topic, there are two things I am personally sure of. I am called to be a mother and I am called to be a teacher. I would not be serving my God to the best of my ability if I gave up either one of these things. Sure, there are many days that my heart breaks to drop G off at the sitter, knowing that I’ll be gone from her for the next 8 hours. Sure, I feel like I miss out on time with her. Is that a good feeling? Of course not, but I can’t deny my calling. I truly believe that I am doing what I am called to do and I am doing what is also necessary to provide for my family. I don’t always like these circumstances, but I love my job and I love my daughter. It’s been a struggle at times to find a good balance, but overall I believe we’ve found that. To those who can stay at home with their babes, there are days I envy you and appreciate the love and care you invest in your children. Likewise, i commend the mothers who choose/must work outside of the home. We all do what we must to provide for our children.

Me Time

Me time is very limited and it's primarily my fault. The control freak in me feels that I need to do it all. This is something that I continue to work on and will try to be more willing to accept as we enter into this new journey. I know I should not feel guilty about needing some alone time, but I do. I've also learned however,  that it is very important to my overall well being. My goal is to become okay with letting others help a little more and allowing myself to relax.

While I understand that these can be hot topics for some, these are simply the choices that we’ve decided to make for our family. We all do what we can and pray that it’s enough. Above all, I want our children to know that the decisions we've made throughout their lives have been made with careful consideration and love.

New to Me Friday Favorites

It's April...and it's Friday...hoorah!

It's an April shower kind of a day.

By this point two years ago, I was just days away from delivering our daughter. I did not need to worry about having a maternity wardrobe for summer. It is not so this time around. With our sweet boy due in July (and me detesting heat), I’ll need to make sure I’ve got some things to wear as the weather heats up. I found this adorable (non-maternity) Jersey Maxi Tank dress at Old Navy. The fabric is so light and it is something I can wear post-baby.

Since Old Navy was having a sale the day I went shopping, I also purchased this Eyelet-Panel dress. It is maternity but will also be comfy the months following baby’s arrival as I try to get back into my old clothes.

This pregnancy has done some crazy things to me that I did not experience with my first. The most prominent issue has been my teeth. A few weeks ago I unexpectedly had to have a wisdom tooth pulled, and then on Tuesday of this week, I returned to my dentist because of some discomfort I was having with another tooth. He was able to do a quick fix that will tide me over until the baby arrives. At that point he can break out the big guns and take care of everything permanently. While I feel that I have great dental hygiene, I feel like I need to find things to get me through this next little bit. I bought this new tooth paste by Colgate*. I’ve always used their toothpaste but with this product claiming to add calcium and other minerals back into my teeth/enamel, I had to give it ago. I’m hoping this will help restore some of what the baby has been depleting up to this point.

*I was not compensated in any way to mention this product.

Spring Break will officially begin at 4:00pm today and I am ready. For a lot of reasons I’m glad to have this little break. One of which brings me to #5!

We will be taking a family vacation and I am so excited! This will be our last trip for a bit and I could not be happier to spend this extra time with my sweet little family. It’s hard to believe that this will be our last big trip as a family of 3. While I’m not looking forward to the drive, I do look forward to enjoying some of the things that Tennessee has to offer.

What's In My Bitty's Basket?

I love the Springtime and I love Easter. Easter is very important in our home as we grieve the sacrifice our Savior made and rejoice in His coming again. We share the Resurrection story with our daughter and stress the importance of what it means for all of us who know Christ as our Savior. While we do not promote the Easter Bunny as a living and breathing, true to life guy, we do share him as a fun character that can be seen in her books and at the mall.

We also enjoy putting together a small Easter basket with goodies for our sweet girl. I love the look of excitement on her face as she pulls each item from her basket. I'm joining Darci for this year's Easter Basket Blog Hop. It's always so fun to see what creative things people put in their baskets. Here is what G will discover in her basket this year...

3 Easter Eggs: 2 containing a pair of socks and one containing a plastic Frozen ring.
Plastic bracelets
Peeps
Egg shaped sidewalk chalk
Sophia the First bubbles
Doughnut Tee

I picked up the Peeps bubbles and the sidewalk chalk at the local Dollar store. The remaining items came from Target.

You can check out G's basket from last year here.
