It's Come to This...
In 2011 I was diagnosed with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). It's a dirty diagnosis that could mean a vast variety of things with even more variations of symptoms. While there were many things I did not know about this syndrome, I was made aware that it may be the culprit behind our inability to become pregnant. After being told by my doctor that she couldn't do anything more for us other than refer us to an infertility specialist, we opted to get a second opinion.
I did some research and chose the doctor I would see. During this time, we prayed that we'd make the right choice in doctors and that we'd know the right choices thereafter when we'd come upon times to make decisions. God granted us immediate peace the moment I met with my new practice. The nurses were super knowledgeable about my condition, the doctors were wise, compassionate and empathetic. We were immediately put at ease. Blood work was ordered, meds were trial and error, failed attempts, promising signs and cycle monitoring were our lives.
Over time we battled our infertility, not once, but twice, and fortunately, God gifted us two beautiful miracles. We count ourselves so blessed.
Through it all I couldn't help but question, "why us?" Over the course of the last year that reason has become more and more clear, and tonight will be yet another piece of this journey. My dear friend and I will begin an infertility support group and bible study. I am grateful for the few women who will be joining us and I am hoping that others will follow.
I now see that part of all the heartache, waiting and growth has brought me to this. I am amazed and humbled that God would call me from the ashes of such a difficult time in my life to share the beauty of His goodness and healing with others. I want to share the hope that can only come from Him. I want them to remember that He is bigger than any diagnosis. I want to provide comfort and encouragement to those whose hearts are riddled with questions and fears. I want them to have what I didn't.
Little did I know, even just a couple months ago, that all of that would come to this.

Baby N: 3 Months
Didn't I just post your 2 month update? Another month has come and gone in the blink of an eye. My heart mourns each passing month but looks forward to all of the milestones. I was not sure how I'd handle becoming a boy - mom after your sister, but there is no doubt that I can do both. My oh my how you've grown...
Weight: 13 lbs 8oz
Height: 24 3/4 inches
Clothes size: 0-3 months onesies, 3-6 months long sleeve shirts and pants (for length)
Eat: 5-6 oz every 4ish hours
Sleep: 6-8 hours
Play: You are still not a fan of tummy time. However, if laid on your back, you'll spend a good while watching people, the fan and any lights in the room. You love playing with your big sister. She constantly wants to hold you and sing to you. To these things you smile and coo. You love people to talk to you and make funny noises.
Odds and ends: You are still working on the body swing that will allow you to roll over. You love to be held up and stand on people's laps. You are smiling so much these days and you are quite the chatterbox. You are starting to try and grasp things and occasionally succeed. You have almost completely rolled over...it's just a matter of time. You are also drooling like a mad man and starting to gnaw on things quite a bit...
You still adore your big sister. My heart skips a beat every time I see the two of you together.
| Be still my heart... |

You went to your first wedding...

You enjoyed some fun at the local library...
We took a vacation to Gatlinburg, TN to meet up with Granna, your Aunt Kelly and Aunt Karla. We had fun making memories. And...even though your Aunt Kelly isn't much of a kid person, she sure seemed to enjoy her time with you. We love being able to share you with others. You are such a blessing and we can't help but fall more and more in love with each passing day.

Happy 3 Months baby boy!

A Girl and a Boy...Now What?
Enough is enough...but how do you decide? How do you know when you are done having kids? For some the answer is simple and concrete. For others there is no definitive answers. Some dream of many but can only have one. Others never dreamed of having any and they end up with a multitude.
I remember soon after our daughter's birth (as in hadn't even left the hospital) people were asking if we were planning on having more children. We had struggled to conceive our daughter, and even though a dream of adding to our family was in our hearts, we really did not know how to answer that question. Of course we wanted more, but whether or not the Lord would grant us more children was a huge unknown. In my heart I hoped He would allow us more children, but to say that we would most certainly have more was not an answer I could give.
When we learned we were pregnant again last fall, we were elated. We had prayed and with the help of medical interventions, we conceived our second child. We were even more excited to find out that we were having a boy! We loved being girl parents and yet we had hoped to experience the sweetness of a little boy. In July of this year I gave birth to a beautiful, red headed little fella. So.In.Love.
Once again, soon after his birth, visitors were asking about our family...but the question was different this time. People were asking us if we were DONE having children since we now had one of each. I did not realize this was such a major assumption. Apparently when you have one of each your family is complete and it's just silly to think of having another.
![]() |
| ::via:: |
I originally wanted four kids (and honestly, I still do) and my husband was content with two (and honestly, I think he still is). Our last conversation had us agreeing that we will most likely try for at least one more. However, we're not sure how this third child will come to be. Each go at getting pregnant has proven more difficult than the last and this difficulty only increases with age (I'm only 30...but still). We still believe adoption may be a possibility, but we'll have to see how we feel we should proceed when that time comes. Right now we are a ways off. We want G in Kindergarten and our forever home to be built. This gives us at least 3 years. We also don't want to rush this precious time. There are plenty of memories to be made before adding another set of tiny feet to our home.
Despite our feelings, we believe the Lord has already determined the size of our family and we trust Him to bring the number of children that He wills into our home. I joke with my husband that we could have twins in an attempt to have our third child...he doesn't see the humor, but our use of fertility meds ups the chances. We also trust God's timing for our next child despite our timeframe. We also trust Him to bring the perfect child(ren) into our lives as He sees fit, whether I am blessed to carry another child or we open our hearts and home through adoption. His plan is perfection.
Personally, it's hard to think of saying that I'm done having children. I love being a mom and love bringing new life into the world. I kind of get why these couples keep having kids...although 19 is a bit much for anyone's sanity in my opinion. My husband on the other hand looks at everything from a very practical point of view and has no problem setting a limit.
For those of you who have decided to call it quits or for those of you who have decided on "your number", how did you do it? What factors did you consider? What made your decision? I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Battling Infertility in the Wake of Baby Season
If you're new to R&R you may be wondering why there is a post on infertility in the midst of all these baby posts. This my friends is because I am no stranger to the struggle of infertility. In fact, our two babes are complete miracles and it was only through God's grace and the help of modern medicine that we conceived. My journey is not to be compared to anyone else, but instead, it is my hope that it serves as a beakon of hope for others on the same road.
If you're interested in reading more about our journey, you can find that here.
This post has been in the making for the last couple weeks. As I was driving down the road the other day I realized that I'm currently in the midst of a baby boom. Several friends and family members are pregnant or have recently had a baby. I found myself in awe of this baby season and it dawned on me that just a few years ago I would have handled this season much differently.
When you are in the midst of an infertility battle, typically every pregnancy and birth announcement is like pouring salt into an open wound. So. Much.Pain. You dread or even avoid baby showers. Your heart aches as you make hospital and home visits, if you can even muster up the courage to do so. You wear a brave face as you fight your battle and you may or may not be open about your challenges. Regardless, this season is like a long, dark seemingly endless winter.
I handled the times leading up to the conception of our two children very differently. For the first I was closed off and quiet. I avoided those I loved, I unintentionally damaged friendships and lost sight of the good that was still in my life. It was a dark time. When we began trying for our second I was much more open and sought support. It was hard but there were glimmers of light.
I just want to remind you that you are not alone. Whether you seek support through online blogs such as this or with close friends and family, it is essential to have a sounding board. Very few people outside of the infertility circle will understand your sense of loss, frustration and pain. They will try to emphasize with the ache but until a person has experienced it, there is no real way to truly understand. You'll be given advice and well intentioned "words of encouragement" and some of it will hurt. Take it with a grain of salt and don't focus on what has been said.
Allow yourself to grieve. Whether you've miscarried or have had multiple failed cycles, there is sense of loss. I think it's actually more fair to say that you may be experiencing continuous waves of indescribable emotional/physical pain...you somehow tread your way through until the next one.
You'll fight jealousy. It's a beast. Never forget that infertility is happening to you; it does not define you, and as I've learned, the experience and how you handle it will
mold you.
I wish you the best in your journey and I want to encourage you to seek the good things that are still in your life as you wade through the season of little ones everywhere. These times come in waves and with each passing one you can either find a way to become stronger and rise above your circumstances or you can drown. Don't go under. I, along with countless others are here to offer you a life line and provide a safe place for these times in your journey.
Be brave. Be blessed.

5 Ways to Beat Mommy Brain
I was watching a rerun of The Middle this week that made me
laugh and empathize at the same time. The mother, Frankie, was constantly
forgetting things, misplacing things and was feeling completely overwhelmed.
She came to the conclusion that it was her family’s fault. They were constantly
pushing their needs and wants into her brain. This forced her thoughts out. She could not remember things that pertained to her. It
made sense. Even before N’s arrival at the beginning of July, I felt
scattered. There were so many things that I needed to do, wanted to do and yet
the items that I forgot seemed to surpass the things I would remember. I was
focused on the needs and wants of those around me to the point that I did not
feel I was being successful in any arena of life.
I’m not saying we should neglect the needs and wants of others by any means. Hello, I’m a mom and wife. It’s my job and heart’s desire to meet the needs of my family. I simply think there is a way to find a balance that helps everyone. In the episode, Frankie tried to solve her problem by holding “office hours”. It was only during these hours that she would address her household’s issues. For instance, if her daughter needed an appointment changed, it was at this time that she could speak to her mom and have the date moved on the calendar. If her son needed a ride later in the week, he could make his request at this time. This system worked for a short period of time but then fizzled out as pressing matters arose and weren’t being addressed. In theory, it was a beautiful system. She was remembering things and her home was returning to order…until they just weren’t anymore.

She was remembering things and her home was returning to order…until they just weren’t anymore.
I’ve tried to focus on ways
that I could benefit all of us and maintain a sense of sanity and order.
I’ll be returning to work in a few weeks and I want the transition to be as
smooth as possible. So…here are 5 simple ways I've chosen to help me combat Mommy Brain.
1. A family calendar. Our family calendar is hung in the
kitchen for all to see. Anyone who has anything coming up must write it on the
calender. This ensures that others are aware of what is going on and it helps
with scheduling.
2. A night stand notepad. I got this idea from a friend. If
I wake at night, whether because I can’t sleep or because the baby is needing
to be changed or fed, I can jot down ideas that come to mind. It may be
something that needs to be on the grocery list or an activity I need to plan
for. By writing it down I can reassure myself that I’ll have it for later.
3. Monthly menu. I make a monthly menu that hangs on our refrigerator.
This takes the stress out of planning what is for dinner on any given night and
because I shop at the beginning of the month (with the exception of replacing
perishables), we have everything we need for every meal. You can read about how
I make my monthly menu here.
4. Sticky notes. During the school year I live by sticky
notes. I write just about everything down on them. They allow me to make my
notes portable. I can also stick the notes in plain sight. That allows me to
better remember what I need to do.
5. Relying on others. Both at work and at home it helps to
ask others to help me remember things. Having an extra person to help keep me
on track has been a sanity saver more than once.
I know a lot of people use their phone and other electronic
devices to keep track of things. I do put dates on my phone’s calendar but I
rarely rely on it to keep me on track. What other ways you save your sanity?

Family Heirlooms
In this day and age of waste and want, it does not seem that things maintain sentimental value anymore. There are several things that have been or will be passed on to me that I treasure and I hope to instill the same type of sentiment and appreciation in our children. I was treated to such a family heirloom when my mom came to visit after N was born.
She gave me a sweet little blue outfit that was crocheted by N's great, great grandmother for my dad. This little treasure is made up of a bonnet, booties and jacket. While it is a little frilly for what most male children would wear today, this 59 year old piece of history looks like something that would be made for a prince.
The crochet is intricate and the blue color is so soft and subtle. I was able to capture a couple of photos of N wearing it. Had I waited much longer I'm afraid my little guy would no longer fit. I love that I will be able to pass this down.

Baby N's Birth Story
Birth stories, to me, are testimonies of miraculous life events. They are examples of love, empowerment, and a humbling dose of real life. I loved reading birth stories as sources of encouragement leading up to my own delivery and I've been looking forward to sharing my own. I shared a brief recap of our daughter's birth story when I first began to blog in June of 2013 and now the time has arrived to share another.
Both of our children are truly miracles. We battled against infertility for both of them and it was only through God's blessing that they were conceived. I've grown to embrace our struggles with infertility because they have made us that much more grateful for our children and they have brought us blessings that we would not have otherwise experienced. I share all of this to preface what I consider a beautiful story. To some it will probably not seem very significant. To some it may even seem a bore, but to me, it is a treasure. It is our story. It is the (lengthy) story of how our son entered the world.
There are many reasons why I consider our son's existence miraculous and each milestone during my pregnancy was a reason to rejoice. One issue that I combatted throughout the course of my pregnancy was hypertension. I dealt with this during my daughter's pregnancy as well and I was well versed in what that could potentially mean for me come time for delivery. It was my hope to have our son naturally and without an induction. I feared what an induction could mean and I was already at a higher risk for a C-section for various reasons and I did not want to add to the likelihood. I watched my sodium intake, took my meds and worked hard to keep my weight gain at a minimum (under the supervision of my doctors.) I was proud of having only gained 17lbs during this pregnancy and I was feeling good about things as my due date neared. However, about 6 weeks prior to my due date, my doctors discussed the probability of an induction based on my rising/inconsistent blood pressure numbers and the impact it was having on the baby. I must mention that my doctors only discuss induction if medically necessary, thus I knew it was serious.
![]() |
| 37 weeks |
My husband was due to return to work on July 1. I was secretly praying that the baby would either come before that day or not make any major changes until the day of our induction. We live almost an hour from the hospital, he works about an hour from home and I could not wrap my head around trying to get our toddler taken care of and work my way to the hospital without him...although one would do what she must. I woke up the morning of June 30th feeling what I thought might be contractions but they were only occurring about once every hour (beginning at 6a.m.) I never even knew I was contracting with my daughter so I was not sure what I should be experiencing. By around 1p.m. I was pretty certain that I was feeling contractions and I began timing them. They were happening about every half hour. By 2p.m. I was experiencing them about every 10 minutes. My husband took my blood pressure and it was also elevated...both were signs that our doctor had told us to look for and call if they happened. I contacted Labor and Delivery and they told us to go ahead and come in.
We dropped our daughter off at the sitter's house. She would be staying with her at whatever point we were admitted to the hospital. The "pains" I was feeling were very mild and I almost believed they would probably send us home. After all, I wasn't doubled over and my water had not broken. We arrived at the hospital and I was examined. I was making a bit of progress despite the monitor only picking up what appeared to be cramping. My doctor was convinced that I was in labor and wanted to go ahead and admit me based on my blood pressure. I was still 3cm but was now 75% effaced. She did a membrane sweep and that really helped to get things going. My contractions steadily became stronger but still manageable. At around 5:30p.m. we were officially admitted, had contacted our sitter, had met the staff members that we would be working with through the rest of our labor and delivery and had settled into our room.
My first labor and delivery were very quick, especially for a first timer. From start to finish it was about 7 hours (4 hours of which were actually active labor, with only one of those hours being the actual transition phase) with about 7 minutes of pushing. I did not have medication of any kind and had every intention of doing it the same way with this delivery. Things don't always go the way you plan...
After about 5 hours of strengthening contractions, they checked my progress. I was only at 4cm and 80% effaced. What?! Are you kidding me?! I wanted to cry. I settled in again and knew that I needed to try and get some sleep, especially since there was nothing that seemed to be speedy about this labor. Of course, my contractions continued to pick up and I became more uncomfortable, so as my husband slept, I tossed and turned, attempting to remain comfortable.
At 1:10a.m. my water broke...and it hurt! I was not expecting the pain and I called out to my husband telling him what had happened. We buzzed for my nurse who came in immediately. I told her that I was certain my water had broken and as I shifted, the flood gates opened. I knew what this meant. Based on my last delivery, once my water had broken, my contractions almost immediately became more intense and delivery was just around the corner.
| The next day... |
Because of the intensity of my contractions, it was a little more challenging to place the epidural but the anesthesiologist was amazing and with the help of my husband and nurse, I was eventually hooked up and good to go. It took a bit for the meds to kick in and I only had what was necessary to take the edge off of the pain. I could still move and I could still feel pressure. After the epidural was placed, I was checked again. This time, I was at a 9 and about 90% effaced. However, N was not tolerating the contractions and was showing continuous signs of distress. My doctor and I discussed what that meant and what may have to happen if he was not delivered in the very near future. I prayed for him to move down. I prayed for my cervix to fully dilate and I prayed for his health and safety as the minutes ticked by.
A little after 4:00a.m. my doctor wanted me to do a couple "practice" pushes to see if we could get him to lower since he was still not stationed where we needed him. She told me that at any point she told me to stop, it was because he was where he needed to be and she needed to get the remainder of the delivery team in there. Within two contraction, she told me to stop. The team rushed in and within what seemed like seconds they had everything ready to go and it was time to bring our baby into the world. I pushed for about 3 minutes and our son graced our lives at 4:15a.m.
I soon learned that the reason he was not tolerating the contractions was because the cord had been wrapped around his neck 3 times. Praise Jesus for keeping our sweet boy safe. He was perfect. He had a beautiful cry, strawberry blonde hair and the sweetest little face. He was immediately placed on my chest and eventually his daddy got to cut the cord. For the next hour we lay skin to skin. I soaked in the surreal moments as the fact that we were now a family of four began to sink in.
While I know words can never convey the true emotions that are experienced during a time like this, I am so glad to be able to share my heart. I consider our family to be abundantly blessed and to our Lord I will forever be grateful. The past few days have been trying as we adjust to new (lack of) sleep schedules, living around the needs of an infant and trying to balance and plan intentional time with our toddler. However, I cherish it all, for I know this too shall pass and our babies will grow up too fast.

Currently 6.25.2015
I've been considering doing one of these posts for quite some time and after reading Jenn's from Going the Distance, I finally convinced myself to do it. I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately so it seems like an appropriate post.
Dreaming ...
of having our new babe in our arms.
Planning ...
long-term maternity sub plans. These are so time consuming! It's hard to wrap my brain around not starting the school year with my new group of students and it's even more difficult to pass the torch temporarily to my sub. I'm fortunate to have an amazing sub that I can completely count on for all things and thanks to her, I know I'll be able to enjoy my maternity leave...it's a control thing. I just keep thinking about the routine and structure and what it will be like to come in 8 weeks into the school year. It will basically be like having them start all over again...any suggestions for how to make this transition easier are appreciated.
Drinking ...
coffee...don't judge. A small one every now and then is a treat and my Keurig was feeling really neglected.
Reading ...
positive, encouraging birth stories and lesson plans from the beginning of last year
Wanting ...
to get the show on the road. I've been having contractions on and off for the last week now...with some good ones early Wednesday morning. I am getting to the point that I either want them to really take off and get things moving or just stall out and give me some solid rest. I did find out, to our surprise, that I am now 3cm and 50% effaced so at least we're heading in the right direction.
Looking ...
for pictures to use in G's 2nd year photo book (free offer from Shutterfly! Woohoo!)
Enjoying ...
down time in the evenings with my hubby. He's been off this week and our nights have been filled with lots of laughter as we watch Big Bang reruns.
Watching ...
our ultrasound DVD from Wednesday. I am so in love!
Playing ...
lots of Tickle Monster, bubbles and play dough with G
Wasting ...
time worrying over "what ifs"
Loving ...
the pre-baby progress we've made. We pretty much have everything in order for his arrival!
Needing ...
a massage...desperately.
Wearing ...
a tie-dye t-shirt and athletic shorts...oh so comfy!
Following ... upcoming local events for the family...
Thinking ...
about my blood pressure and how I really hope it stabilizes.
Feeling ...
so blessed. I am in awe of all that God has been doing in my life and as I feel a little overwhelmed about our upcoming year and the difficulties we'll be facing, I am so grateful to know that my God will provide.

Currently...
Dreaming ...
of having our new babe in our arms.

so blessed. I am in awe of all that God has been doing in my life and as I feel a little overwhelmed about our upcoming year and the difficulties we'll be facing, I am so grateful to know that my God will provide.

Afterwards I'll head to my OB for this week's appointment. I'm still having occasional contractions and he's setting very low. We're all getting super excited about his arrival...
This is going to be a big change for our two year old daughter and I want to make it as positive of an experience as possible. We've been trying to prepare her and we have most of the details taken care of for when it's head to the hospital to deliver.
We want her time at the hospital with us to be just as special. Meeting her brother for the first time will be a big deal, at least for me. I want her to know that she is still loved and thought of despite all the newness. With that in mind, I put together a Big Sister bag for her for when she visits us at the hospital.
Here are the items that she'll discover upon opening her bag...
-Bubbles
-That's When I Knew by Claire Alexander
-A coloring book
-Crayons
-This Big Sister shirt
-Dessert Flavored Skittles
-A puzzle
I picked up the cute bag from the Dollar Tree of all places!
I had fun piecing the gift together and I look forward to her opening it. I also stuck a picture of all of us and a note inside her bedtime book that she'll take with her to spend the night at her sitter's house. I don't know who this will be harder on, me or her...but either way, we're all in good hands.

Bump to Birth: 8 Months
I'm a couple days behind getting this up since I turned 32 weeks on Sunday. We've had a lot go on in the pregnancy world as of late, which just reminds me that we are that much closer to meeting our sweet little miracle.
Size: Jicama
Gender: Sweet Baby Boy
Name: Picked and ready to be announced at his birth!
Symptoms: tired, cramping, sinus pressure, Braxton hicks contractions, headaches, tingling in my face (which according to my doctor has most likely been caused by the amount of pressure I've been having from my sinuses), peeing A Lot more often, a lot of low bearing pressure (and as I'm typing this I have experienced several sporadic contractions today, most of them being small but noticeable...but one good one that took me out of my chair today.)
Emotions: eager to make progress, excited about all of the things we have coming up, overwhelmed, anxious, excited
Doctor’s Visit:
May 8th-my BP was slightly elevated, urinalysis (came back negative for proteins and glucose), require a screening for sleep apnea
May 15th-Ultrasound to check placenta...it has moved 2cm! This is good and lowers my risk of hemorrhaging a great deal but it will be up to my doctor as to whether or not this is sufficient to forgo a C-section. The baby was measuring right on and weighing in at about 4lbs (50% percentile).
May 19th- preliminary sleep screening...recently there have been a couple cases in the area where people have died after not coming back from anesthesia. It was apparently discovered that they were at a higher risk for sleep apnea. I had no idea what this was and/or what it had to do with me delivering a baby until this appointment. There is a rating scale that my practice now uses to determine if you are at a higher risk for sleep apnea. I have just enough (and I mean barely) to put me on the low end of the higher risk end. Should I need to be put under for an emergency C-section or any other procedure, they want to ensure that they are providing the best care based on possible conditions. The NP that I spoke with said that if I had anything it all, it would be very benign. She did not appear worried and ensured me that if there was any diagnosis, no matter how mild, I would be well cared for should anesthesia be necessary. While the thought is a little terrifying, I trust my doctors and I am scheduled for my sleep study on May 31st.
*Super pleased that I've only gained 13lbs so far!
Movement: He may be little but he packs a punch. He has his more active times of day, especially at G's bedtime. Story time is always interesting. He is directly pressed up against my bladder and with his almost constant downward pressure these days, I'm always feeling the urge to go.
Cravings: pizza, breakfast foods, hamburgers with pickles and ketchup, chicken finger wraps
Aversions: mayo and Mexican food
According to Big Sister: She may be coming around...she picks up some of his things as we're going through them and lovingly holds them saying "Baby ****'s" She loves to rock her babies and she likes to tell people that Mommy has a baby in her belly. We may just be okay.
Memories:
-Celebrated G's 2nd Birthday!

-Made a nice little chunk of change at a local consignment sale...well worth the effort.
-G's 2 year check up went really well.

-We had a our baby shower at work.
-We celebrated Mother's Day (the last one as a Mommy of 1 (I really count both babes but for dramatic purposes...)
