Bitty Bowties

I was going to wait to post this until Friday for my Five on Friday...but I could not wait! I had to share with my small little world the amazing goodness that I delved into this evening.

I am now officially declaring myself an Alfredo snob. I've used the short cut jarred Alfredo sauces for years. As of late however, the tables have turned and the jarred sauce just won't do (not to say that they aren't tasty...but after tonight, I am solidly sold on making my own).

After cooking my chicken and the pasta, I combined them with all that is creamy, cheesy goodness. Combine a finely shredded Parmesan, some cream, some garlic and other tasty ingredients and you  have the type of sauce that will make you physically stop and savor your first bite. I actually heard myself "mmm" in a moment of complete cream sauce bliss. I could have stayed in this perfect moment if it weren't for my darling 6 month old who was eager to have her own moment with her plums.

I can't say enough good things about this delicious dish. While it will have to be an every-once-in-a-while meal, I look forward to making it again. It's a shame that such garlicky, cheesy perfection does not go well with the loss of baby-weight.

Without further adieu, I present to you...The Pioneer Woman's Bowtie Chicken Alfredo (no surprise to you I'm sure).

Yum!

Making a Menu

Every month I pull together my cooking resources to create a menu. It saves me time, money, and energy. Several of my friends have asked how I do it. I believe 100% that if you have something that works, share it!  I have a lot of type A in me and this menu task is just one way I put it to good use. Here is my basic system.

1. Compile the resources from where you wish to choose your meals. I have a variety of sources ranging from cookbooks, blogs, Pinterest, etc. This month's meals come primarily from The Pioneer Woman's blog, The Pillsbury Soup & Crock-Pot Recipes cookbook, and Pinterest.

2. Have a game plan. My system is pretty simple when choosing meals. I want meals that will not take too much time away from my family and have minimal prep. I have a basic meal outline that cycles through each week.

Monday: Pasta (or as I like to call it, Noodle Night)

Tuesday: Taco Tuesday (various Mexican recipes and of course, the tried and true taco smorgasbord)

Wednesday: One Pot (these meals are usually soup or crock-pot related. The rule is that the meal has to be able to be made in one pan or pot, thus easy clean up)

Thursday: Throw Together (these are simple meals that can be made from leftovers or require minimal ingredients. Often times casseroles are used  this night.)

Friday-Family Favorites (I pull from my family's favorite recipes)

Saturday and Sunday-I'll experiment with new recipes, eat left overs, or grab a bite out while we run errands. You won't see meals listed for these days on my menu, mainly because I rarely know what the weekend will hold.)

3. Map out your meals.

4. Create a grocery list. I do this as I go along. As I write down the recipe I'd like to use, I place the ingredients on a grocery list. I typically know what I do and don't have in the house and only include items I need to purchase.

5. This is where my type A kicks in. I organize everything and transfer the menu to a printable calendar. You'll notice that some meals have letters in parenthesis. These letters indicate which cookbook, blog, etc. that I need to pull from along with the page number if needed. This goes on my fridge. I love having it there for easy access and my husband, when he's feeling it, can begin making the meal on the nights he's home before me.

6. My final type A maneuver is yet another list. I break my grocery list into sections such as "produce", "canned", "cold", "household", etc. This helps me work my way through the grocery store without any major backtracking. My list also contains other items that I need to replenish, such as shampoo, paper towels and the like.

This system can be used for any length of time, whether it be a week or a month. If you are super ambitious, I suppose you could even do a year. More power to you:) Sometimes I break up the process, and then other days, like today, I was able to complete everything between G playing and taking her nap. This process allows me to have a month's worth of meals. We eat leftovers throughout the week for lunch as well. I am proud to say that by the end of all of this, I have one grocery trip that provides my family with 3 meals a day for the entire month. Should I not feel like a certain meal one night, I can swap it out with another knowing that I have the ingredients already on hand. I simply replenish perishables throughout the month. I hope you'll find this process just as beneficial as I do.

Just for Fun

This weekend, my hubby and I went out of town for a very special baby shower. While visiting our friends, we were able to have an anniversary dinner out while they graciously kept G. The weekend was grand despite G's 3 day fever, teething, and the obnoxious hotel guests next door. The baby shower was a wonderful success and we can't wait for baby Cadence to get here come December!

Five on Friday

Finally! The week has reached its end. The ground is speckled with golden leaves and the trees are showing off their fall color flair. Absolute perfection. We have some wonderful things in store this weekend...More to come on all of that. For now, I'm linking up with The Good Life and RunningMOMentum for this week's Five on Friday.

Today marks a very special day for my husband and I. On this day, in about an hour from now, we will have been married for 5 years! I can't believe how quickly time has gone. We laugh about the first year or so. We definitely learned about all of the fine print that comes with the "for better or worse" part of the vows. God has blessed our marriage in ways we could not even imagine. He has carried us through awkward moments, the joining of two very different lives, infertility and the birth of our first child this year. I can't help but smile as I think about all of the possibilities that lie ahead of us.

To celebrate our anniversary, my husband gave me a very, very special gift. He gave me an anniversary band for my wedding set. I LOVE IT! We'll be celebrating tonight with dinner and some just us time.

This week has been filled with joy and sorrow. While we celebrate today, just yesterday we were mourning the 1 year anniversary of my grandpa's passing. He was one of the strongest, bravest men I've ever known. There was so much strength in the hands of that farmer man. The power and callouses that were used to plow the earth, mend fences, feed the livestock, and split wood are the same gentle hands that would play keep away with our noses, hold us while he told us stories of days gone by. Those same hands held his Bible during the church sermon and the hymnal when we'd sing. I miss him dearly and hate that Gracelyn will never get to know the man that made us laugh and love the outdoors. However, I smile when I think of how he waits just inside those pearly gates to greet his grandchildren, children, and wife on the day we come Home.

Pumpkins, spice and everything nice! I took some time this week to enjoy a little baking. I have a simple recipe that was given to me by a friend of mine from collage. It's simply a can of pumpkin and a box of spice cake mix. They make the yummiest pumpkin spice muffins! I of course had to top them off with something sweet and delicious. I made some of my Cinnamon Maple Cream Cheese Icing. I could have ate half the pan...thus I took them to school to share with my much deserving co-workers.

My obsession with The Pioneer Woman's recipes continue. This week I made her Roasted Chicken. Oh. My. Word. This recipe was simple and is definitely a keeper. Paired with some brown rice and green beans it makes the perfect meal. It would also be delish in some chicken salad or on a sandwich. I strongly encourage you to try it!

Carving

What a good day!

Church was a blessing as always. Afterwards, G and I headed to town to eat lunch with one of my dearest friends. It was so nice to have "adult conversation". C has been pulling 72 hours from home and I was in much need of some grown up time. She made me feel so much better about my mommy moments. I had another one Friday night. My sitter informed me that G's nap schedule is changing. She is sleeping for a shorter period in the morning and longer in the afternoon. I felt so bad that I didn't even know my daughter's sleep schedule. I know in reality that there is nothing wrong with this. She has her routine at the sitter's house and she has her routine with us. I'm working on being okay with that. It's just hard sometimes knowing that I'm missing out on things.

With that being said, there have been a lot of things in my life as of late that remind me to cherish every moment with my daughter. I can't get enough of her! God has blessed our lives beyond comprehension. While we have a little while before we attempt to add another child to our home, I try to imagine what it would be like to love another child this much. It becomes almost overwhelming and yet I know God has made my heart large enough for all of the children He will place in our home. What a beautiful thought.

As the beginning of the week draws near, I'm trying to figure out the best way to approach our "homework" from Sunday School. We were challenged to carve out at least 5 minutes of time for ourselves that we would not regularly do. It cannot be a part of our regular routine. I'm trying to develop a plan to accomplish this task. I'm asking God for wisdom. He is good. He is faithful. He provides each of us the same 24 hours in a day. It's what we do with it that counts.

This week holds a lot of wonderful things. On Thursday we'll be taking G to the doctor for her 6 month appointment. I can't wait to see how much she's grown. On Friday we'll be heading out to celebrate our 5th wedding anniversary. On Saturday we'll be celebrating the upcoming birth of our friends' daughter with a jungle themed baby shower. I'm in charge of the cupcakes. I take great pride in my baking and decorating...unfortunately both have been very limited due to the demands of a baby. The cupcakes for this weekend will be simple, but will taste just as they should...delish!

At some point we'll be carving our pumpkins...well at least the big one. We'll probably paint G's. Who knows, we may just paint them both. It's nice to have options.

As I add to my "to do" list, have been taking the time to really be intentional with the things that I am doing. This includes G's night time routine. I love reading to her and I hope she too will have a love for literature as she gets older. Tonight I broke out a new book to add to G's list. I read The Kissing Hand by Audrey Penn. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed this story. It is so simple and sweet. If you haven't read this story to your little one, I encourage you to do so. It is also a great "first day of school" book and has been used by several of my teacher friends.

I suppose I'll head to the kitchen and finish the dishes. There are just a few things that I need to take care of before the week begins. Enjoy the rest of this beautiful weekend!

Where Did The Time Go?!

At 1:33am, 6 months ago today, our beautiful daughter entered into the world. I cannot believe that she is 6 months old! Time has flown! She is so much more active. Her laugh is contagious. Her smile melts our hearts. Everyday with her just gets better!

My hubby had to work today (by the time he gets home on Tuesday he will have been gone 72 hours) so G and I attempted to celebrate this milestone. We went to the Apple Butter Festival at a local orchard. I typically go with a good friend of mine, but since her move a few months ago, I had to go solo this year.

G and I enjoyed the sights and sounds. There were crafters and food vendors. One of the best parts is the apple tasting. They have samples of all of their apples. This is always so fun!

We also always make our way into the pumpkin patch. G got to sit among the pumpkins and play with her very own. I only brought home two this year. I figure two will be more than enough since our time to carve or paint will be limited. G seemed to have a blast strolling through the pumpkin patch and watching the other pickers. There were babies toddling, older couples pulling wagons full of grand kids, and younger couples making a date out of the day. I had to laugh at one of the little boys. He was walking around and loudly announced that he had found a "big pumpkin gold mine" and that he had found what was possibly the biggest pumpkin in the patch. He was so proud of himself and waved frantically until his father came to see his prize. While I don't want to rush the years, I do look forward to when G gets excited about these types of things.

I took some time to work on G's memory photo book tonight. It's always fun to look back at the months and see all of the milestones she has met. I still can't believe how much she has changed since that chilly day in April.

I also took the time to finally do the voice recording for one of her story books. While it's weird hearing my voice, I do hope she'll enjoy listening to it as she gets older.

I look forward to tomorrow. I've missed my church family and our Bible Study. I also have nursery duty tomorrow which is always fun.

A couple months ago I was introduced to this couple's story through a mutual friend. I've posted on them in days past, and while it is unlikely that we'll ever meet, I have cried with them, smiled with them, and prayed with them. I don't know if the connection comes from being the mother of a daughter or just the fact that we are united in Christ. A couple weeks ago they had a celebration gathering to celebrate the life of their precious little girl who, after 10 beautiful hours on this earth, went home to be with Jesus. They continue to be on my mind almost everyday. I hope you'll take time to go through this celebration video, lift this family in prayer, and rejoice in Sophie's healing, even though it was not on this side of Heaven. To hear them share, you can forward to around the 30-35 minute mark. They are a beautiful, spirit-filled couple. Please join them in celebrating Sophia Kyla.

I've gone a little crazy with these leg warmers. They are so fun to make and G looks adorable in them! Not only are they super cute, but they are so versatile and make diaper changing a snap (sorry for the pun).

I wear this necklace on a regular basis and with G turning 6 months old tomorrow, I can't help but reflect on its significance. My husband bought me this necklace not long after we found out we were pregnant. I love all that it represents to me and as time seems to be flying by, I can look on this and remember everything leading up to our miracle.

A friend of mine at work surprised me with this special gift. It is a place mat that she thought I could use at work. I loved it so much that I have been diligently searching for more in order to put them on my dining room table. It's not so much the gift but that she thought of me. It's been a long and trying week. Having not said anything to her, she blessed me in a big way. I love how God works.

My mom sent us a special package this week. It had a little something for all of us in it. I just love what she sent G and to top it off, she included her delicious pumpkin bread recipe. I am so blessed to not only have an amazing mother is this beautiful woman, but I am doubly grateful to be able to call her one of my best friends.

I hope everyone has a blessed weekend!

Dated

I believe my students woke up this morning and thought to themselves, "what can I do to drive my teacher crazy today?" I hope today was a fluke and things will normalize tomorrow...

As the days of this week press on, I find myself looking forward to the weekend with much anticipation. While I don't know who'll be joining me, I'll be taking G to one of our local pumpkin patches. They are having their annual Apple Butter Festival. In years past, I've gone with a dear friend of mine...but considering she has made her way to Boston, I'll be going without her this year. Fall dates continue to make their way onto our calendar. This time of year, on through the new year, will remain busy. One of my favorite activities, at whatever point I can get to it, is to begin putting dates on the following year's calendar. Tonight I bought our 2014 calendar and have begun to add birthdays and predetermined events. I love having things to look forward to.

One thing that I find particularly bittersweet is the date that marks my daughter's first birthday. I love the idea of the party theme, the friends and family gathered around, and her first dive into birthday cake. I ache, however, at the thought of my daughter getting so big. There are so many times I long to keep her little, even though I know it cannot be so. And, truth be told, there are so many things that I look forward to doing with her as she gets older. Regardless, I count myself unbelievably blessed to be her mother. God has given me a huge responsibility and I can't help but take complete joy in my role.

The final thoughts for today revolve around my three gifts that join my list today. I am to focus on 3 Gifts Burned...hmm.

-Wood Stove: The smell of wood smoke fills the house each winter as the logs crackle and pop with the fire's heat.

-Smores: I never eat Smores alone. I am always surrounded by loved ones, typically around a blazing fire in the crisp autumn air.

-Charcoal dinners: I've only burned a couple of meals in my time. I count these as gifts that, while not funny at the time, bring laughter to those of us who were there to experience them.

I suppose I'll take these "warm" thoughts and begin preparing for bed. Tomorrow will come way too quickly for this tired mom.

I Don't Know How She Does It

Not bad for a Monday. It was a teacher work day, and even though I didn't have students, I still did not accomplish all that I had set out to do...I suppose it would help if my list wasn't so long, but any bit of progress is still progress. I found it interesting, that while I was feeling under accomplished, multiple people at various times today made comments about how they don't know how I do it all. I could only say thank you for their admiration and laugh on the inside...if they only knew.

First off, I only survive the messy ins and outs of this life by the grace of God. His love and mercy carry  me through and provide me with the strength, wisdom, and patience that I need. Secondly, if they could see the evenings when I sit and want to cry because of long hours, lack of sleep, and the next to none "me time", they'd know I don't have it all together. My house is only sparkling when I know I have company coming (don't look behind any closed doors) and the piles of laundry mock me from their sorted piles in the basement. They don't see my heavy sigh as I drag myself to a sink full of dishes for the thousandth time (my next house WILL have a dishwasher) or lay staring at the ceiling because the baby is out of sorts and has woken up again...They haven't sorted through my multiple Post-Its and note pads filled with chicken scratch lists of to-dos and should-have-dones. While I wish I could proudly say that I have it all together...I do not. I guess I should be pleased that I can minimize the chaos to the outside world...and yet, there are times when I wish there was full exposure. I feel that it's so important that people know that without Christ I could do nothing. I would fall apart. I am grateful for a God who loves me for who I am but is not satisfied with leaving me that way. He is always providing opportunities for me to better myself.

I Don't Know How She Does It (2011) PosterThe movie, I Don't Know How She Does It, has become very relatable as of late. I really enjoyed the film and if you get a chance, check it out.

I find it fitting that today's 1000 Gift List challenge is to list "3 Gifts Said".

-This week the couple we prayed for and asked to be the guardians of G if something ever happened to my husband and I said "yes".

-Our friends said "hello" to their new son for the first time yesterday. (They are currently in China and will be bringing their precious darling home towards the end of the month.)

-"Be strong and courageous. Do not fear or be in dread of them, for it is the Lord your God who goes with you. He will not leave you or forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6 ESV

Make Mine Tortilla

Sweet Potatoes and Carrots
I spent a large part of my morning yesterday at the doctor. We're home today while my little one rests and works through this cold/allergy mess. Her cough is pitiful and that nose! Oh her nose...thank goodness for soft tissues. Suction. Saline. Repeat. The craziest part of all of this is that she is not napping. Don't sick children normally sleep more? That's been my experience, but like so many things with G, she has been the exception. She slept for maybe an hour in all yesterday. While I love looking into those baby blues, I'd love to see them flutter and close into a deep, restful sleep. Fortunately, she has not been overly fussy. Sweet girl.

With a sick little one and cool temperatures, soup seemed fitting for last night's dinner. My hubby and I love the Chicken Tortilla soup from a prominent restaurant chain. I suppose I could have looked up a copycat recipe, but the recipe I chose knocked their soup down a few notches. I chose to make The Pioneer Woman's Chicken Tortilla soup (no surprise right?). It required a little time but it made such a large amount (great for freezing and sharing) and it was delicious! She incorporates ingredients that make what is typically a thinner soup, hearty and delicious. I paired it with a tomato basil provolone grilled cheese. Perfection.
Sautéing the veggies...the scent of peppers and freshly minced garlic...intoxicating

Boil, baby, boil!
Add in the tortilla strips and cut off the heat...
A dollop will do...pair with a grilled cheese and you have the perfect fall meal.

As mentioned earlier on in the month, I have incorporated several of The Pioneer Woman's recipes into my October menu. Last night I broke out the heavy cream and cheese (these are not meant favor your waistline) and made her Perfect Potatoes au Gratin. I would recommend adding about 10-15 minutes of additional baking time, but overall they were delicious!!! I took some for lunch today and the smell alone received multiple compliments.

The Croods (2013) PosterEpic (2013) PosterI normally don't review movies. I either like them or I don't...however, C and I (true kids at heart) watched two new movies over the last couple of weeks. The first was Epic. We LOVED it! The graphics are beautiful and the story line keeps you interested the whole way through. The second movie we watched, just this week, was The Croods. Adorable. We laughed a lot and loved the characters. I truly look forward to the day when G can enjoy these movies with us.

Okay...back to nursing my little one to health...let's hope G is able to sleep most of the night instead of waking up every couple of hours. Fingers crossed...

Wacky Wednesday

Today was a roller coaster ride. While I'm mentally exhausted from the chaos of the day, it felt so good to pick up G from the sitter, look into her beautiful baby blues, and snuggle her cuddly little body close to mine. I was so wiped out from today that I played Christmas music...yes Christmas music in October...to lift my spirits on the way home.

Upon getting home, my hubby and I worked together to make dinner: Buffalo Chicken Salad...Yum! G enjoyed some mangoes.

I was able to get the kitchen cleaned up before C left for his meeting. This allowed me to spend the remainder of the evening with G. She enjoyed her bath time, as always. She was then fed and put to bed. Normally she falls right asleep. This evening she was up for a quite a while, kicking her legs in her bed and letting me know that she was not quite ready to lay down for the night. She eventually got over this and the house has since gone quiet.

I took this time to venture forth with one of my DIY projects. I've long awaited to complete this project and with the fall weather setting in, the timing could not be more perfect. After my last DIY was a minor bust, I was a bit anxious...but this project was VERY successful and I will be making more...I now present to you...baby leg-warmers! I'm so in love!

This project was a great way to wrap up my evening. The last thing I need to do prior to going to bed this evening is to focus on my 1000 Gifts List. Since the start of this prayerful, eucharisteo focused journey I have entered 44 God graced gifts. While I could spend hours listing, I have decided to focus on just a few at a time. This allows me to savor these moments of grace and thanks. Today's challenge is to list 3 Gifts Praised For...

- Bold Innocence: As the controversies of faith in public arenas, primarily schools, continue to rage, I find such refreshment in the hearts and minds of my first grade students. While I do my best to love them like Jesus, the way they minister to one another is so encouraging. My students frequently speak to one another about going to church, loving God, Santa vs. Jesus, and so on. They are unwavering in their convictions and will stand their ground against any killjoys. If only as adults we would readily maintain this child-like faith.

-Zac: Zac is the soon-to-be two year old that will be placed in the arms of our dear friends over the next few days. This faith-filled couple left today to travel to China to retrieve the child that God has set apart for them. Praise God for His love and provision!

-6 Month Milestone: G will turn 6 months old this month. I praise God for each day we have with her and each advancement she makes. While her growth is bittersweet, I rejoice in each moment.

I hope you'll take some time to reflect on gifts of praise. We truly have so much to be thankful for.

Flip the Flops

Having lived in Georgia for many years, I find it very difficult to relinquish my flip flops as the seasons turn here in the Blue Ridge mountains of Central Virginia. As the cool weather sets in, the mornings are greeting us with temperatures in the 40s. Combine those temperatures with the wet dew and you're talking some cold feet! I'm not sure how much longer I'll sport my favorite type of shoes, but I know it will soon be coming to an end...at least until Spring returns.

This week already seems to be dragging along...it's only Tuesday and I'm already wishing for Friday. Tomorrow is a new day...and I'm trying to be optimistic.

Today's challenge centered around 3 Gifts Prayed.

-Conception: For well over a year, my husband and I earnestly prayed for the time when the Lord would allow us to conceive. We never gave up hope that He would fill our home and hearts with children...there were many days when we could only rest in His promises, hope and pray. Then, last August, God blessed us with our most precious gift...a positive pregnancy test signifying the conception of what would become known as our beautiful, truly beloved, daughter.

-Jobs: Both my husband and I worked in different positions prior to our current jobs. I was a Child Protective Services Social Worker and my husband was a machinist. While our salaries allowed us to be comfortable and our needs were met, we knew God was calling us elsewhere. I went back to school to obtain my Master's and to my surprise, God led me into teaching. I graduated with my Master's of Arts in Teaching. I now serve as a first grade teacher. My husband left a very profitable position to follow his true calling. He became a full-time firefighter for a nearby city. We both LOVE our jobs. While the pay cut was major, our happiness flourishes, the Lord continues with His provisions, and we rejoice in knowing we are exactly where God has called us to be.

-Healing: Over the last several months there have many close loved ones and acquaintances that have dealt with sickness and loss. I am continually amazed as I see God intervene. I am most taken back by how even when the healing does not  happen on this side of Heaven, God comforts the hurting hearts and brings peace to weary, aching souls. Only He can bring that kind of healing.

There are still so many things that C and I continue to pray for and about. We have answers we are longing for, and while the waiting is often the hardest part, we know God is working out all the details and will produce amazing results in His time.

A Gift Baked, Stirred, and Eaten

A rainy Monday. Enough said.

While the monochrome clouds began to break towards the end of today, I realized that I had yet to reflect on and list the gifts for my October challenge. Today's gifts include one gift baked, stirred, and eaten. Of course, my mind instantly goes to things that fill my home with harvest time smells. This time of year fills our home with scents of enticing spices and sweet vanillas as apple pies are baked and soups brew on the stove top. Here are the gifts that made it on my list today.

-Baked: I am fortunate to have a husband that is open to a new recipe every night should I so choose. While I have some tried and true go to recipes that make it onto my monthly menu, I am constantly experimenting. This month's menu has quite a few recipes from The Pioneer Woman's blog page. Tonight's tasty recipe fit right into the baked category. I love to serve my husband a piping hot meal that feeds the heart and tummy. Each bite that he enjoys is a special gift in and of itself as it brings joy to my soul. I love to see him happy and content...and you know the old saying? The way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I've got that covered. Tonight's meal was Sour Cream Noodle Bake...delish!

-Stirred: You may be surprised to find that this gift is not one that comes out of the oven or off of the stove top. I was reminded of this gift tonight as I was reading One Thousand Gifts. The author discusses a passage that I have heard and read multiple times throughout my life. The scripture comes from Luke 17:17-19. It tells of the time when 10 lepers were healed and only one, a Samaritan man, returns to give thanks to Jesus for his healing. Jesus inquires as to why he is the only one to return to give thanks. Without what seems time to respond, Jesus than tells the man to "Rise and go; your faith has made you well." (v. 19) The author makes a point that I had skimmed over for all these years...if the man was healed prior to coming back to Jesus, why then did He tell the man that he is fully healed and made well? Here it comes...the point that I've missed over and over again. Jesus looked past the physical healing and focused His eyes on the man's heart. The man was made whole. He was transformed by his faith. It's moments like this...these moments of recognition...these "ah ha" moments...that stir my heart and soul. They get my mind churning and my heart yearning to submerse myself in God's truth. Only when we come to God with a sincere heart of gratitude are we experiencing the joy of our God given life and salvation.

-Eaten: Considering food has been my enemy these last few weeks, I had to think long and hard about how I wanted to approach this gift. I decided to take an easy route on this one and list a special little goody given to me by one of my fellow teachers...it would have to be a Cran-Orange cookie. While some of you may wrinkle your nose, I know that it is simply because your taste buds have not experienced cookie perfection such as this. It was such a special treat on this dreary Monday.

Just for Fun

I have become a little obsessed with this whole making bows business. They look so adorable on G's little strawberry blonde fuzz (I say on because she is yet to have enough hair to put them "in"). Here is another one that I did tonight. I can't wait for her to wear it! I have realized that I need to start branching out. There are so many cute styles...I just tend to find something I like and run with it for awhile...I'm also hoping to get some leg warmers made for her this week. Yay for fall temperatures!

3 Gifts Redeemed

Redeem: to buy or pay off; clear by payment

Today's challenge is to list 3 gifts redeemed. I took some time to reflect on this today. "Redeem" has it's place in several facets of life...from the redemption of a coupon at your local grocery store to the redemption found at Calvary's cross. Redeem...a core concept at the heart of my salvation.

3 Gifts Redeemed

-My salvation: My Jesus died a tragic, unimaginable death, only after living a perfect, sinless life. He bought me with a very high price...His very life. This occurred solely that I, and every other sinner such as myself, could have a perfect eternity with my Savior. The gift of my salvation is of course the number one gift ever accounted for in my existence.

-The Jeep: If I look at gifts from a materialistic stand point, my vehicle comes to mind. Thankfully, due to the Lord's provision and my discipline, I was able to pay off my Jeep early. This would have been the year that my debt would have finally been paid in its entirety, but Praise God! I was able to pay it off in 3 years as opposed to 5. That has been a major blessing.

-Student Loans: I have mixed feelings about listing these as a "gift". Student loan debt will haunt me for years to come...it was a necessary evil. However, in an attempt to change my perspective, I have come to a point where I can consider even this hefty payment a joy. While they are far from being paid off, I rejoice in the Lord's provision to be able to pay them every month. I rejoice in the degree that allows me to have a job that I love. Yes, even student loans can be a gift.

While thinking upon today's gifts and the beauty of this day, I ran across a couple truths in my devotion that really struck a chord with my heart.

G is already for church
"Joy is [God's] presence-driven not circumstantially bought or delivered."

"The joy of His presence envelopes you and protects you."

The joy of the Lord is eternal. What a heartwarming reality.

I also read a verse that I will most certainly carry with me this week. I was doing very well with my weight loss and have since failed miserably over the last couple of weeks. I'm dreading the scale tomorrow. Knowing that we all have our battles, I thought I'd share:

Jesus looked at them intently and said, "Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible." Matthew 19:26

Just for Fun

As mentioned in one of my previous posts, I listed 4 upcoming Pinterest projects that I wanted to accomplish. I designated one for each month. Last month I completed G's peasant dress. This month I wanted to make a watercolor onesie for my daughter. I gathered my materials and prepared to begin. Unfortunately, this project was not successful. I did everything as I was told, but after reading similar posts on the same concept, it appears that rubbing alcohol should have been used as opposed to hydrogen peroxide. At some point I may attempt this again using the alcohol. I did manage to salvage one of the onesies and I look forward to putting G in it.

I'm looking forward to trying several new recipes this month and making some DIY leg warmers for G.

Out and About

I'm looking forward to the fall weather returning. Today was a last ditch effort by summer to leave its impression. I'm not going to miss it.

My hubby, G and I went out soon after he got home from work this morning. We hit a few yard sales on the way into town to run errands. One of my favorite finds was a little table and chairs for G. While she has a ways to grow before she can fully enjoy it, we'll surely have a blast with some of our friends' children. My hubby found an old school Tonka truck like the one we both grew up with. I also found a couple of cookbooks and books for G. There were so many yard sales today that there was no way we could hit them all and still get our errands done before heading home in time for C to get into the woods. Yes ladies, the time of year has arrived when many of us will once again become Hunting Season widows.

I've had a few VT onesies for G and she is finally able to fit into them. However, I didn't want to put yet another daisy on her headband...so, a mom does what she must. I purchased some ribbon and put together my first hair bow (without instructions)! Take that Pinterest! I'm looking forward to making more as I look through some more styles and possibly some diy instructions.

Tomorrow should be an equally enjoyable day. We have church and then we're meeting friends for lunch (and I'll be picking up my bridesmaid dress for my cousin's November wedding). We'll end our time in town by stopping by the house of one of our favorite couples to see their newest addition. We can't wait to snuggle their new little boy and get in some play time with his 17 month old sister.

Before tomorrow gets here, I need to get down my "gifts" for the day. Today's challenge is to list 3 Gifts Returned...this was difficult. I'm not certain what this is supposed to mean but here is what came to mind...

-Hunting Season: Hunting season is such a blessed time for our family. While I miss my husband in the evenings that he makes his way into the woods, I can always count on him to do what he can to provide our family with bountiful blessings. We save a large amount of money by processing and then freezing his kill. Many people are repulsed by the fact that we do such things, but my grocery bill speaks for itself. I cringe when I have to buy beef. Last year was a less than desirable year for filling our freezer. Normally we have enough meat by the end of hunting season to last until the next one. This year we ran out in early summer, and we don't even eat a ton of red meat. I see this time of year, every year as it returns, as yet another blessing for our family.

-Answered Prayers: All around us, prayers are being answered. I was reminded of that truth as I read an email from some of our close friends. They have been praying for God to open the doors for them to adopt overseas. Their request was answered very quickly as far as the world of adoption is concerned, and they will be leaving in just a couple of days to head to China. They will return towards the end of the month with their new son. This is just one returned answer filled with blessing.

-Former Students: Every afternoon when buses are called, I have a few former students that faithfully stop by my room. They always have funny stories to share, hugs, and lots of love. They are such little blessings.

Five on Friday

There are so many wonderful things about Friday...one of which is linking up with The Good Life for Five on Friday!

On Tuesdays, my first grade team gets together to discuss various academic topics, co-plan, and share resources. Not only do we contribute ideas, but we contribute food! A couple weeks ago TG brought in some orange cranberry cookies. They were to die for! Ever since I'd been trying to pacify my sweet tooth. With G being more active and more aware of where Mommy is at all times, it's a little tricky accomplishing things in the kitchen. She'll only tolerate her bouncer for so long. So...this Tuesday I brought in one of my long forgotten favorites: Chocolate Peanut butter Pie. Yum!

I just had to stop yesterday morning. This is a feeble attempt to capture the beauty of yesterday's sunrise. If this is what our side of Heaven looks like...I can only imagine what it must be on the other.

Each month I put together a menu, along with a corresponding grocery list. This menu/grocery list will feed my family 3 meals a day for the entire month of October. I incorporate a lot of recipes from The Pioneer Woman in this one...so excited!

I am a huge fan of Kroger*. I love their selection and I can always find what I am looking for. I also love that I don't have to clip coupons to save money (although I know I might save more if I took the time to do so.) Another perk of being a Kroger card holder is that I get free downloads on Friday! In the past I've gotten free boxes of popcorn, breakfast items, etc. While this week's free download isn't one that has me jumping up and down, at least not until G gets a bit bigger, I still thought I share...

This Friday's offer:
  • exp 10/19/2013
Free Tum-E Yummies Fruit Flavored Drink Get One (1) Free Tum-E Yummies, 10.1 oz. Limit one per house... more
*I was not compensated to "advertise" for this store.

While this takes care of my Five for Friday, I did want to quickly mention my 3 Gifts Reaped.

-Student Achievement: As a teacher there are times you wonder if what you are doing is making a difference. We differentiate until we're blue in the face and then wonder if it is doing any good. Today I reaped a great reward! My students made HUGE strides on a particularly difficult math concept!

-Joy: As I diligently work to change my perspective, I find myself truly experiencing joy. I feel at peace. I no longer feel rushed. I'm finding time for the little things. I feel like I'm turning a corner :)

-True Friendship: A long lasting, unconditional, forgiving friendship is rare. In order to succeed, one must constantly work at communicating, compromising, and loving. I am so blessed to reap the rewards of this gift.
