Tips on Raising a Well Mannered Toddler

I have to preface this. We are far from perfect parents as is our toddler. However, we've found a few things that actually seem to be working in our parenting, and one of them is raising a child with manners. It goes without saying that she still has her moments. We've had a few fits and the typical testing of boundaries, but her manners continue to increase. In fact, she's at the point that we rarely have to prompt the appropriate response.

Here are a few tips that we feel have helped us get to this point.

1. Set the example. If you want your child to naturally begin to pick up on the please and thank you cues, you need to be using them yourself. As a teacher, this is one of my biggest pet peeves. I'm always astonished at how many children don't even think to use these when asking or receiving. In fact, with each passing year, the sense of entitlement that comes with each new group seems to be more and more. I won't even go into the lack of respect for adults...I digress. As I said, it has to start at home with you.

2. Encourage. Encourage your child to say please and thank you in everyday activities. Before our daughter gets anything she requests, she has to say please. There have been times that she refuses and quickly finds out that we do not respond to that type of behavior. Side note: She has also learned that just because she says please does not mean she'll always get what she wants. This opens up a new area of learning for our little ones, but she seems to handle it pretty well. We've worked hard with her on learning to say thank you when she is given something. Sometimes we have to prompt her with "what do you say?" and she responds appropriately.  It's even seeped into compliments. She now says thank you when someone compliments her on something. I was surprised when she first did this. It just goes to show that you should never underestimate the abilities of out little ones.

3. Don't give in. Those tantrums can be killer. However, it's better to bear the moment than to set yourself back. I was once told that the tantrums always seem worse to you than others. I learned this to be true the first time she showed her bad attitude at a local store. I felt so embarrassed, but as I looked around, no one was even paying attention to us. With any behavior, consistency and boundaries are key. Say what you mean and mean what you say. As a former behavior specialist and now mother, these things have proven true for any age I've worked with.

4. Start small. Learning common courtesies needs to begin from the time your child is super little. They need to hear these words, observe these actions and be included when possible. The scope of being well mannered and respectful goes far beyond just please and thank you. Beginning to teach your child these things while little can lead to even bigger and better things. It's hard for my first graders to get used to saying please and thank you when they have not been taught it at home. These itty bitty years are so vital in helping them become who they will be in the future.

Think of it this way, if we want kinder, more respectful adults, we need to be raising kinder, more respectful children...and that starts with us.

The Power of a Shower

I'm still adjusting to being a mom of two. Schedules differ, needs are vastly different and the demand varies. With N at 8 weeks old, he still requires so much.G has her own needs and wants that inevitably should take priority just at the time I'm feeding the baby. My house is never together or completely clean and my list of to-dos is not getting smaller.

I'm learning to give myself some grace.

My body is still not my own, the healing is still happening and the one night of solid sleep I had last week is but a distant memory. Since life is a beautiful mess everyday there is very little I get to do for myself. As this is my 2nd time around, I'm well aware of the importance of focusing on myself from time to time.

In comes the shower. Never underestimate what the spray of hot water and some sudsy, aromatic body wash can do. Typically I have at least one kid hanging out in the bathroom with me but on the special occasion that they both nap at the same time...bliss! The rejuvenation that can come from washing away the smell of spit up, sweat and mommy fog is essential to being able to bring your best...even if your best isn't back to normal.

Whether you're a new mom or just new to baby #4, remember to take a little time for yourself. You'll be glad you did.

Witching Hour Worship

The "witching hour" is an experience that most parents will come to know. It's a period of time where your child cries for what seems like no reason. There is no pacifying them and at times it can be almost maddening. Our daughter had a brief period in which for about an hour, beginning around 9pm, she would cry inconsolably. This time around with our son, we felt a bit more prepared. While the last couple weeks have had us wanting to cry ourselves between the hours of 8 and 10pm, we know that this too shall pass. In fact, the last couple nights have been much better.

As we tried to work through this time with our daughter, we found it best to get her outside. Many nights we could be found sitting on the front porch or walking her around the yard. It was all about survival. It's a bit different now. Having two in the house makes it a bit trickier.

G's bedtime happens to be at the beginning of N's witching hour. On nights that I'm home alone I've had to find ways to adapt. I have placed him in his crib (which is in his sister's room) while I complete my daughter’s nighttime routine. This worked for about 10-15 minutes. I tried getting him to sleep and leaving him in the pack n play downstairs only to have him wake up and begin screaming in the middle of my daughter’s bedtime story. I have brought him up in the bouncer to bounce him as I read to and rock my toddler. This seems to be one of the more successful tactics.

After G is in bed, I turn all of my focus to N in an attempt to calm him and survive the remaining hours. One way that I have found to cope this go around is to sing. I don't choose the typical lullabies. In fact, these times have begun turning into a time of worship. I sing whatever worship songs come to my heart. The singing may or may not calm my son, but it calms my heart as I draw closer to the Lord. As I sing the words I can feel my tension ease and my burdens becoming lighter. It's amazing how blessed I feel and how at peace I can become as I worship during the difficult times so rightly termed the witching hours.

When You're Not a Mom on Mother's Day

This quote popped up on my TimeHop app the other morning and as soon as I read it, I knew exactly why I had shared it.

The quote came during a time in our infertility struggle that I was losing hope, tired of the fight and could only hope, pray and dream that one day Mother's Day would hold a new meaning for me. Of course I celebrated my amazing mother. I would not be who I am without her...but as I sat in the church pew that Mother's Day morning, I could only think about how much my heart ached to be a mother. I was not envious of the flowers or cards. I was not jealous of the recognition. I was sad. My heart longed to know motherhood.

That Mother's Day came and went. I shed the same tears that I had shed the year before and I prayed desperately for the Lord to answer my prayers. To our unexpected joy and delight, He did answer that prayer later that year.

I'll never forget the moment I held our little girl for the first time. It was at that moment that I knew everyday would be Mother's Day. I would celebrate this joy forever. The Lord had heard my prayer and answered my request with a blessing beyond our dreams.

Mother's Day 2013

As I type this, I am currently 31 weeks pregnant with another miracle...another answer to prayer. We ran into similar issues in trying to conceive this sweet little boy and I cherish God's blessing. I rejoice in what He has done. As my heart rejoices over this little life that is growing inside of me and over the fiery redheaded little girl that calls me "Mommy", I cannot help but remember those years of longing and sadness...those years my heart felt so empty on Mother's Day.

For those of you who find yourselves feeling that same ache and feeling that same frustration, remember you are not alone. While you stare longingly at the little ones around you, remember that there is a special plan for your life. I had to be reminded of that daily. I also had to be reminded that God has great plans for the little lives that He brings into this world and that those lives will be conceived in the womb and delivered into the world at His appointed time for His miraculous purpose. While these truths are real and are meant to be reassuring, we won't always feel their comfort.

I say these things to encourage you to not lose hope. Open your heart to what God has for you and daily prepare yourself to accept His blessing when it comes. Be open to how He may bring children into your home. Our sweet little ones don't always come from our own wombs.

I say these things to also remind you that just because you are not a mom (yet) on Mother's Day does not make you any less of a woman. You were designed with a purpose and your story is far from over. It took me a long time to grasp that God was developing and furthering a part of my testimony that would later used to help others. I have since been able to share my battles of infertility and the hope that the Lord gives in the midst of the ache with others. I have seen God fill wombs that once were barren. I have cried and laughed with women who never thought joy could be found in such a painful plight.  I have seen true miracles occur and I have seen what faith can do.

May 2015

Mourn this Mother's Day if you must. It's okay, but please, please don't lose hope. Find a way to keep looking forward. Keep dreaming. Embrace the now while anticipating the future. Your miracle may be just a moment away...

They Can't Go Around Naked

This is my son I everyday!!!! and I add this as a Grandparent... it is so precious to laugh with them!!!
::via::

While it's true that baby bottoms are some of the cutest things you'll ever see, as responsible parents, it's our job to clothe them. If you're like me, you may be finding your little one growing out of everything she owns. This venture from "baby land" into "toddlerdom" is no joke. We were very blessed to receive so many gifts for G at our showers. In fact, unless I just wanted to, I didn't really have to buy her any necessitates until about 12 months, and even then it was just a couple things here and there...but now? She is comfortably wearing size 2t and those are just not clothing sizes that you typically get at baby showers. It's understandable considering new born, itty bitty clothes are virtually irresistible.

We skimped by in October since I had set a personal goal to not buy her any clothes for that month (you can read about it here). However, I quickly realized that most of her 18 month clothes are becoming too short (she's rocking the 80th percentile for height) and with winter weather creeping in, I needed to take some serious inventory of her fall/winter attire. This resulted in about 3 fleece pullovers, 5 pairs of adequate fitting pants, and about 8 shirts (and one snug winter coat). Needless to say, I realized it was time to bite the bullet and purchase some new clothing.

iFunny :)
::via::
Okay...maybe not that cold yet but this was seriously funny...

Now don't get me wrong, I adore buying new clothes for G and at times it has been a serious problem. Little girls just have so many cute options! However, with the purchase of new land, our soon to be forever home on the horizon, and other financial obligations, I try to remain savvy when it comes to clothes shopping.

If you're still in the blissful stages of having all the clothes your little one could possibly ever need, great! If not, here are a few of my favorite ways to save on clothes for little ones.

Hand-me-downs
Hand-me-downs are seriously my favorite way to acquire clothes for G. They are free and I have been fortunate to have friends that take really good care of their daughters' clothing. It's nice if you have someone that you can cycle through with, but if not, take what you can get.

Gift Lists
Friends and family often ask what they can get G for various occasions and I always suggest clothes. Many people love to purchase cute little outfits for your itty bitty...so make the suggestion! And let's be honest, most of our kids have more than enough toys anyway.

Clearance Racks
This one can be a little tricky. Sometimes it's hard to gauge what size they will be in the following year when you're buying seasonal clothing. I lucked out last year. I bought an adorable patriotic outfit for G at one of my favorite children's clothing stores for $3! It fit her perfectly the following summer. It goes to show that you can find some really great deals if you're willing to sift through the racks.

Thrift Stores and Consignment Sales
You can often find great scores at local thrift stores and consignment sales. I recently picked up several pairs of pants for G for about $2 a piece. Granted these deals may not be as good as some of your yard sale finds, but considering we don't personally see many yard sales come November, I'd say this isn't too bad. I suggest when it comes to large consignment sales that you wait until their discount days to shop. While you may not have as vast of a selection as you would have on previous days, you can score some great clothes for super cheap.

Online
Such public domains such as Craigslist and Facebook house many opportunites for good finds. We've bought several larger items (e.g. treadmill and shelves) and over the last week tapped into the baby/kids section. Just this past weekend I acquired 6 pairs of pants, 4 pairs of leggings, G's Halloween costume for next year, and two nice winter coats for $25. Most of the coats I've been eyeing for G have averaged at least $20-25, so I'd say this was a good deal. (Disclaimer: You may not feel comfortable meeting strangers to obtain your items and that is okay. My hubby has stepped in many times to either come along or he'll pick them up...always at a public meeting place.)

The Shops
There are several stores that I enjoy shopping in if I can catch a good sale.

The Children's Place and Crazy 8: I love their adorable clothes and they have customer rewards, which is always nice.

Khols: I've purchased several clothing items for G in the past from their online site. The deals were great and of course you can earn Khols cash.

Sam's Club: I know you're probably thinking, what?! Yes! We have had a membership for years and I have bought multiple items for G while doing our bulk shopping. They carry great clothes for kids and have them very reasonably priced. In fact, G's Thanksgiving outfit came from there last year.

I hope this helps if you find yourself in a similar situation. There is no sense in going broke just to keep your kid clothed.

*I was not compensated in anyway to suggest these businesses.

Infertility Hurdles: Surviving the TWW

If you are not familiar with the TWW acronym, it stands for the (dreaded) Two Week Wait. Those two weeks are the ones following your ovulation. What does or doesn't happen during those two weeks can drive a gal crazy...

If you've been trying to conceive and you chart your cycles, you are probably acutely aware of how obsessive these two weeks can become. Every "symptom" is scrutinized. A slight dip in your temperature can trigger disappointment. A spike in temperatures sends your hope soaring! There are oodles of things that we try to spin in our favor in order to cling to the hope of pregnancy.

With the past two years we've had this is my new Motto!!!! Not good news for Ricks eye today, but he is still going to try and go back to work. Doctor had to get back into his eye surgically and move the tear canal again...then add more stitches. For some reason the bills just don't understand what "can't get blood out of a turnip" means!!! Let me tell ya girls, if you need any tips on the many ways to cook Potatoes, I could write a book!!
::via::

I'm no stranger to the TWW. I remember all too well the roller coaster of emotions from TTC our daughter. Emotions this go around are pretty much the same, but my support system has changed...in that I actually have one and they are awesome! We're all going through this together. No matter how long you've been TTC there is no less sting when temperatures bottom out and a BFN is clearly in the near future. Handling this disappointment is a post all in its own, but I thought I'd share with you some ways I survive the TWW.

Happy TWW!
::via::

Of course one of the main things I do (which may or may not be a healthy choice) is obsess over enter my chart data. There is very little that we can control regarding when we'll get pregnant and yet most of us feel a need for a sense of some type of control. In my case, I feel like I can at least control the data I enter into my chart, which includes my BBT (Basal Body Temperature) and "symptoms". I try not to get wrapped up in it. It just helps to show me and my doctor what is going on during my cycles. *I chart my entire cycle for accuracy.

Now here are some non-chart related things that help me pass the time...

Blog: This blog has become such a wonderful source of encouragement and it serves as a great outlet.

Bible Study: I recently started an infertility related bible study. It has served as a great foundation for me and the gals to approach infertility (and every. single. unsuccessful. cycle.) from a faith perspective.

Cook/Bake: I have always loved to cook and bake. Trying new recipes is a hobby of mine. I really ramp the production during the TWW. If I'm cooking I can sort out my thoughts and I can refocus my energy. Hobbies are a great way to keep your mind occupied.

Get Outdoors: There is something about a mountainous view and fresh air that cleanses the soul. It's a good way for me to clear my head and gain a fresh perspective.

Family Time: I LOVE my family. There is nothing better than spending time with my husband and daughter. The laughter, conversations, and memories divert my attention to more important things and I savor those precious moments.

Technology Breaks: I've backed off of Facebook for a few months now and I am very happy with my decision. My family time is more intentional and, while I'm not "in the know", I know enough. It gives me a reason to call, send a letter or text someone directly. It has made my relationships more personal. When I step away from my phone or the computer there is a crazy amount of freedom that comes with it.

Girls' Nights: Girl friends are essential in surviving the TWW. Taking time away to vent, cry and laugh with friends that are going through the same thing is extremely helpful. Don't get me wrong, I love spending time with ALL my friends and they are so encouraging. It's just different being with those that understand...however, being with friends that are not baby obsessed is also nice in that not every conversation revolves around trying to get pregnant.

Create a Bucket List: Get a list together of things you'd love to do or accomplish. Get busy in checking them off. This will give you things to look forward to while you wait.

There are many things you can do to help you survive the TWW besides burying your face in a tub of ice cream. Save that for the BFN if it comes. I'd love to hear some of your survival tips...

Infertility Hurdles: It's All In Your Head

I mentioned the other day that I've felt really compelled to blog a series of posts on infertility hurdles. Needless to say, it's been a really tough week. What looked so promising ended up being a bust. Why is something that is supposed to be so "natural" so ridiculously hard?!

There are so many difficulties that lie within the realm of infertility. It is an all encompassing medical matter. The heart, mind and body are all impacted.

I thought I'd begin focusing on the mind. If you've been in the Land of Infertility for any amount of time it's likely that you've heard something like this...

"If you'd just stop thinking about it..."
"Once you stop trying..."
"Just relax..."

Whats that? You think relaxing will cure my disease of infertility? Go ahead. Tell me Just Relax one more time.
::via::

You'll run into these well-meaning "best of intentions" at some point if you haven't already. It's only natural for our friends and family (and did I mention complete strangers) to offer advice on something they know very little about. They want to make us feel better...oh if they only knew how words can hurt.

A war begins to wage in your mind. You begin to question your self-worth, your ability to be a good mom, your choices, and your future. One of the biggest questions is "when will it be my turn?!" Unfortunately there is no cookie-cutter standard for a time frame. For some it's the first round of meds and for some it's never. Most of us fall somewhere in between.

With every baby shower invite, birth announcement, pregnancy announcement and trip into Wal-Mart you are bombarded with baby.

Unfortunately, it's not like the desensitization of children with video games. For those struggling with infertility, this constant exposure only makes the longing worse.

Not only do you question your time, but you frequently wonder how all of these people who, despite your desire to not pass judgment, can have kids that they tend to so carelessly. Why do drug users, abusers, teenagers, etc. get to bring life into this world when you have a loving, stable home in which to raise a child? It makes no sense...and that is something that sooner or later, you'll just have to accept. Tough stuff, but true.

You walk around raw. Broken. Struggling to hold onto hope.

Your life becomes a roller coaster of emotions. Your cry frequently and avoid certain social situations. You separate your times of waiting. It probably goes something like this...

TTC emotional rollercoaster - Imgur
::via::

From personal experience, these thoughts and constant highs and lows, when not dealt with, can lead to depression. I struggled silently for the majority of our TTC journey. It wasn't healthy and impacted every area of my life. That's why, when we decided to TTC this time around, I knew I needed to do something different. I'm finding my voice.

There is no one thing that you can do to over come the sadness that comes from infertility, but you can do many little things to help yourself along the way.

-Talk about it. This is not easy for most but it is necessary. Maybe there is one person you feel you can trust. Possibly join a support group. Don't try to work it out on your own.

-Speak with your doctor. Make sure that your physician is aware of how you are feeling. They need to help keep this in check.

-Take mental breaks. Maybe you have a hobby or enjoy the outdoors. Find something to occupy your mind for even a moment...because lets face it, when you are TTC it is almost impossible to think about anything else.

-Journal. This was something I did faithfully. It's how I recognized (although after the fact) that I was dealing with depression. When your thoughts are penned to paper, they are no longer captive.

-Chocolate. Okay. This is not the best advice and I do kind of kid when I mention this one, but there is something about a moment with chocolate that makes the world seem momentarily right again.

-Cling to your faith. As a Christian, I did not fully rely on God to get me through that time. I admit it. I wanted to control something and while I could actually control none of it, I didn't turn to Him the way I should have. I was not in the Word faithfully, and I began feel like my prayers were rote as opposed to from the heart. I became numb. I didn't live what I truly believed. I lost sight of the fact that God is in control, that He has a beautiful plan for my life, and that His miracles take time. Delving into His Word helps to keep these truths fresh when Satan tries to tell us otherwise.

keep on dreamin'

I hope you'll find some comfort here, regardless of how you can relate. Remember it's not all in your head. What you feel is real. And maybe you are a friend of someone TTC. Use this information to your advantage.  Don't give advice. Don't pity. Be a friend. Be a shoulder. Pray.

Pins that Work

It's another Oh Hey Friday! I've survived my first week of school, which I'll probably share about at some point. Tonight I'll be hosting a little get together at my house and after a long week, it's the perfect way to wind down. Who doesn't enjoy a good laugh with girlfriends?

Yes!! A night out with my girls is definitely needed here and there~ I love my friends!
::via::

I've been trying to utilize some of my pins on Pinterest. I only have hundreds that I haven't tried (but swear I will someday.) I thought I'd share with you a few pins that I've personally tried and have found to be successful. Let's face it, there are many wonderful sounding ideas (particularly recipes) and then, once you try them, they don't make the cut. I hope to share a few that you'll find helpful.

[Removing Grease Stains]
Who hasn't accidently dropped a chicken wing or something else grease laden on their shirt or pants? If you haven't, maybe you're not enjoying life to its fullest. For those of us that end up with the mysterious or not so mysterious grease stains on our clothing, there is hope. This past week I indeed required some assistance with a grease stain acquired during dinner. Tara at We Got Real has an excellent method for removing these types of stains. I actually came home and followed her instructions. I held my breath as I pulled my khakis from the washer and tada! No more grease stain!

How to get grease stains out of clothes. It works! Brand new shirt and I managed to get multiple grease splatters on it while cooking. Did both the dish soap and baking soda steps and the stains came right out :)

[Clean Floors]
Having a toddler, spills are inevitable. Don't you just love walking into the kitchen, or any other room for that matter, and have your foot stick to the flooring? Your mind goes through many scenarios as to how it got there and what it might be. I'm all about a clean floor. I have fallen for this simple DIY cleaning solution. It smells fresh, doesn't leave any type of film and is very inexpensive...not to mention my floors look fabulous!

This is a personal favorite that was created in my own kitchen. I haven't made it in a while but have added to the menu once again. It's full of fiber, protein and a great way to get in your greens.

[Healthy Peanut Butter Chunk Oatmeal Bars]
As a sweet lover I am always skeptical about sweets that are deemed "healthy". Typically they have a cardboard texture/taste and I feel as though I've wasted not only time but ingredients to make some of these things. With that being said, I shared those same hesitations when I stumbled upon this recipe for Healthy Peanut Butter Chunk Oatmeal Bars. I made them as snack for a road trip we took...and to my surprise, they were pretty tasty! In fact, my hubby and mom gave their approval. Besides what's not to love about chocolate and peanut butter?

[Fruit Salsa]
This is one of my personal favorites. I wanted a taste of something light and fresh that wouldn't make me need a nap afterwards. I came across this recipe for Fruit Salsa and Cinnamon Chips. Super easy. Super good. I imagine you could add a variety of other fruits, but it would not be necessary. The combination of fruits listed in the ingredients is a perfect mixture. Note: Instead of using the brown sugar and preserves in the original recipe, I used 1tbsp. of sugar-free raspberry jello powder mix.

Monthly Weight Loss Update

If you remember in my last post, I didn't have any thrilling news...which is okay. You win some and lose some and while I wish I was losing more than what I am, I'm proud of small victories. I gained a few pounds last month and it was my goal to get them off. Of the four pounds that packed themselves on I have lost 3 of them. That puts me back at a 20lb loss.

Even greater still are the discoveries I made this past week. I decided that with school starting, and since I have not bought new clothes in ages (I am currently still wearing clothes that I bought after graduating collage), a little shopping trip was in order. Having lost 20lbs, many of my clothes do not fit like they once did. This is a good and bad thing. Some of my pants now fit as they should while other pairs literally fall off of me.

Now, when it comes to pants, I've always had a problem buying a pair that fits just right. This is simply because those that make pants must assume that women with my waist size have hips to boot. I do not. There is nothing "hippy" about me. How does this relate to my discovery?

Well, I ventured into Old Navy to purchase a couple of tops. They were having a sale on their khakis. The pair that I had bought last from ON fit fine prior to the weight loss. They now require a belt if they are to be worn. While these pants originally fit better than most, I still looked like I had wings where my invisible hips were supposed to be.

My first discovery was the Diva Everyday Bootcut Khaki pants. Love! They are designed for the souls like me with straighter figures. (Don't get me wrong, I have curves. They are just in the wrong places.) I love how they hug me in all the right places.

My second discovery was the size. I could wear a size smaller!!! Talk about an embarrassing happy dance! I was so excited! While to some this is nothing, to me this was a huge accomplishment! I have not put on a pair of pants this size since high school.

This got me excited and I added a couple more pieces to my work wardrobe (pardon the pictures. I'm horrible at selfies.)

This has given me a new sense of motivation. I'm making a few food choice changes. I've been reading through The Low GI Guide to Living Well with PCOS (again) and I have decided to get back on track with a diet that includes more PCOS friendly foods. Remember, when I say diet, I'm not referring to starving myself. I am referring to the types of food I eat.

I've made a few changes to my menu that include low glycemic foods, which means less dairy, more whole grains, fruits, veggies and lean proteins. There is a balance and I am working towards that. Low glycemic foods break down more slowly, leaving you feeling fuller longer, and helps reduce the surge of insulin that is often produced with starchier foods. You can view a pretty comprehensive list of Low GI foods here.

The final discovery I made while perusing the good ol' internet, is the Food Swap tool by the Glycemic Index Foundation.

You can also find more resources on my Living with PCOS board.

So here's to hoping for good things in August.

Thoughts on Thursday

All I can think of as I'm typing this is that I'm in this nice hotel room with a plush king size bed...and have been for 3 days...and I've yet to have a good night's sleep.  Vacations were so different before parenthood.

I go to sleep in anticipation of sweet dreams and rejuvenation...so why do I feel like I've been run over by a truck?

This precious little face. Yes, believe it or not, this tiny human is the reason.

I totally get being in a new place. We never sleep as well as we do at home. In her defense the first night was not entirely her fault. At midnight a ridiculously loud child came running down the hallway yelling, followed by an apparently unconcerned parent. Grrr. G ended up in our bed (which personally has never been allowed but we did what we had to). When she was not sleeping sideways, her tiny body was pressed into the small of my back. I couldn't move.

::via::

The second night was similar except it was around 1:30 am and the culprits were random loud adults. It was another sleepless night.

I kept kicking myself for not bringing her bedtime music to drown out the noises.

The final night of our stay was much better despite some crazy person slamming a door across the hall 3! times at 4:30 am. I just knew she'd wake up but praise the Lord, a couple mumbles were all we heard.

This is not the first time we've traveled and stayed in a hotel with her, but it seems as she gets older that she is having more difficulty sleeping in new places.

These are things we currently do to help her sleep away from home:
-extra padding on her Pack -N- Play "mattress" to make it feel more like her one at home
-Play her bedtime music (when we remember to bring it)
-keep closely to her normal bedtime routine
-wear her out during the day
-lay her down with her moose and "night night" blankie

We'll continue to live and learn but I'd love suggestions to make our future vacations a little more peaceful. What works for you?

...and thanks for stopping by to join myself and others like Natalie for this week's Thoughts for Thursday!

This Land is My Land

There is this world separate from everyday living. It is called the Land of Infertility. You need no passport to travel here; in fact, most of us arrive to this destination against our wishes. This trip can cost thousands and the emotional toll, while without a price tag, can be even more costly.

It is an all-encompassing journey.

As a Christian woman, I’ve always believed that I was made to procreate and nurture. Scripture even validates my belief…

Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it.” Gen. 1:28a

When we encountered the reality that we were dealing with infertility, it was as if a load of bricks had been thrust upon me. I remember thinking: I saved myself for marriage. I waited for the one God had for me…I’ve tried to live according to God’s commands. How can this be? How is it that we can’t begin this family that we’ve so often talked about having? No body tells you growing up or during the "birds and bees" speech that you could face the possibility of infertility.

I struggled for over a year with these feelings and many others that I am not proud of. Jealousy ran rampart. I experienced depression. I avoided baby showers. I cried in public at the sight of pregnant women. I was not a good friend. I was in one of the darkest times of my life. It was a time that I have no doubt that Satan fed off of.

I cried constantly. My heart continually ached. It was a silent struggle in my life that very few had any inkling about. Some days I had to force myself to venture out.

We did receive an unexpected blessing. Out of the darkness our God shined brightly upon us and blessed us with a beautiful, healthy little girl. She is sincerely more precious and amazing than we could ever imagine.

April 2013

I’ve tried to be more open about my fears and concerns regarding adding to our family in the future. Countless times I’ve been told, “Well at least you already have one.” Yes. Praise God. And I am well aware that some may never know this joy. I’ve been left feeling guilty at times for wanting more children. I’ve always had a dream of a large family. People make comments or try to give advice or try to console, and while I appreciate the good intentions, I don’t want anyone to be offended when I don’t find comfort with your words. It’s a hard place to be in. It is a very difficult journey, whether you have been trying for 2 months or 12 years, it’s never easy.

As I’ve been diving into the Word as of late, I’ve come across some similarities between my infertility journey and those in scripture. Take Sarah for instance. She was destined to bring forth a child that would influence and contribute to nations long after her life on earth was over. However, for years and on into very old age she remained barren. Her circumstances fed into feelings of anger and bitterness (Gen. 11:29) It was then that I realized, even this woman who was referred to as one of God’s most faithful (Heb. 11:11), faced a similar darkness. I was made acutely aware that there are lies. There are lies that Satan would have you dwell upon and believe. Those same lies are used to consume your hope and whittle away at your faith. Maybe you’ve heard some of these lies…

-You are alone.

-No one understands.

-You are not worthy of a child.

-It will never happen.

-You are broken.

These are ugly, ugly lies straight from the pit of hell. These lies creep into hearts, take root, and then grow thorns into your self-worth, your outlook on life, your marriage, your friendships, and family relationships.

In all honesty, I had gotten to a point where I avoided Sunday School because it was too painful to see all of my pregnant friends and to hear about their other children. Yes, it seems lame, but in my grief filled bubble, it was what I felt I had to do.

These lies fed my bitterness with each "unexpected/unplanned" pregnancy announcement. There were times that I thought the words, “we weren’t even trying” or “we got it on the first try” would kill me.

Like I said, it was a very dark time.

As we face the issues of infertility once again, I feel these same feelings trying to surface. I’ve been diving into scripture, persistently and boldly coming to God in prayer, and clinging to what I know is Truth. When I talk about hoping for more children in the near future, I often get the response, “you had one so you would think it would be easier this time.” You would think…but no. So while I know there will be more tears shed and more moments where I have to intentionally choose my joy over the past and current pain of disappointment, I am holding fast to several verses of scripture.

It is my hope that if you are living in the Land of Infertility, that you will seek God first. His best will be more than we can ever imagine. It is also essential that you talk about it. I have made a couple of wonderful friends through an infertility support group. Even if you only confide in one person, do it. This journey cannot be walked alone.

I want to share with you several pieces of scripture that I have written down on both paper and my heart. I repeatedly come back to these verses as reminders of God’s goodness. I hope you’ll take time to focus on them, let them sink in; let them uproot the lies that you’ve allowed to grow in your heart and mind. Remember that you are never alone.

“Ah, Sovereign Lord, You have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.” Jeremiah 32:17

“Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.” Hebrews 10:23

“You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in Your word.” Psalm 119:114

“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.” Psalm 130:5

Jesus looked at them intently and said, “Humanly speaking, it is impossible. But with God everything is possible.” Matthew 19:26

Remember...when these feelings arise and reality is hard to process...you are not crazy. You're feelings are valid and above all, God is and always will be Sovereign.

Oh Hey Friday!

I want to thank Karli and Amy for hosting Oh Hey Friday!

I've got a lot on my plate today...literally. I'll be decorating a baby shower cake for a dear friend at church. I haven't done much cake decorating as of late so I'm a little anxious to begin again. I began decorating a little over 3 years ago to bring in a little extra money while I was finishing up grad school. I really enjoyed it and hey, if you can get paid for doing something you like, I say "do it!" Here are just a few examples of my handiwork.

Hand drawn and piped VT Hokie Birthday Cake

Bandana Themed Wedding Cake

Owl First Birthday Cake
Rubber Ducky Baby Shower Cupcakes (with handmade fondant ducks)

Fall Wedding Cake

I put cake decorating on the back burner when I was about 5 months pregnant. My carpal tunnel had become very painful and lets face it, pregnancy, a full time job, prepping for a new baby, etc. takes up a lot of time and energy. I had to step away from cake.

I recently took on an order for 250 wedding cake pops. They were an adventure but well worth the effort.

I thought I'd center this Oh Hey Friday! around 5 of my favorite cake decorating tools. Who knows...maybe you'll feel inspired!

OH 1:
Wilton Cake and Cookie Lifter

::via::

This tool is extremely handy! It is my go to tool for lifting and transferring cake tiers. That can be a tricky undertaking and having this tool has really made this part of the process a lot easier.

OH 2:
Cake Spatula

::via::

This spatula is one of my closest cake decorating friends. It allows me to ice my cakes, regardless of height, with ease. It's perfect for a basic crumb coating and does just as well to layer on a smooth layer of icing.

OH 3:
Kitchen Aid Mixer

::via::
Of course you don't have to have a mixer such as this, but let me just tell you, if you do a lot of baking, this machine will pay for itself in no time. We got an excellent deal on my machine a few years ago. We banked on coupons and a great Mother's Day deal. I've made double batches of both my cake batter and icing with no problem.

OH 4:
Piping Bags

::via::

People will tell you that using plastic zip lock bags will do just fine...and for some little projects, they will. However, if you don't want icing squirting out the sides mid decorating, you'd fair well to simply invest in some piping bags. I have both the reusable and "throw away".

OH 5:
Wilton Fondant

::via::

While my icing and cakes are homemade, my fondant is not. I'm not a fan of eating fondant icing but a lot of people really like the look it gives to the cake and it works really well for making various types of decorations. With that being said, it has been my experience that making my own fondant is both time consuming and not cost effective. Make your life easy and purchase some premade fondant. It comes in a variety of colors and gel food colorings make tinting the fondant a breeze.

If you are opting to purchase any of these items, many of your big name craft stores offer coupons that help cut the cost down a good bit. Just about all of my cake decorating supplies are bought with coupons, have been bought on sale, or were given to me as gifts.

I hope you'll find some time to enjoy something sweet today!

*I was not compensated in any way to share any of the above mentioned products.
